With the vast world of Hyrule before us in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom you will be wondering just how to cross these lands in the most timely fashion and maybe with a little bit of style. Here is how to get a horse to help you.

How to Catch and Tame a Horse in Tears of the Kingdom?

Firstly, find a horse (a key component). Once your desired trusty steed has been located follow these simple steps to mount up. All of these controls are optimised for Nintendo Switch.

  1. Press the left thumbstick to enter stealth mode.
  2. Stealthily crouch-walk to get behind a horse
  3. Press A to mount up.
  4. Press L repeatedly to not be dismounted by an angry horse

As expected of wild horses, they will buck and try to throw you off but once you have repeatedly pressed L they should be tamed.

Another method is, once you have access to Ice fruit and a bow, to attach an Ice Fruit to an arrow. Target a horse, then shoot it with the arrow to cause a freezing effect. While it’s frozen, approach it and mount up in the same way as above.

Voilà, the Horse is yours.

How to get enemy horses

You will spot enemies, especially Bokoblins, riding on horses. This is another way to get hold of your horse while dealing with those pesky enemies.

  1.  Shoot them with your bow to make them fall off.
  2. Their horse will gallop away until it relaxes.
  3.  You may then attempt to mount up in the same way as above.

Skeletal Horses

In Outskirts Stable which is located southwest of Lookout Landing, an NPC will tell you about Skeletal Horses in nearby Sanidin Ruins. Mysteriously, they only appear at night. Sadly, you can’t register this mount in any Stable but you should still stand a chance at riding them.

Spot the Dalmatian-looking horse

Eventually after obtaining your steed, you will be able to register them at the stables. Stabling your horse will lead to a short side quest in Lookout Landing where an NPC is trying to repair the stables. You can help by using the Ultrahand ability to grab and place the wooden roof for them.

The man will tell you that his horse, Spot, ran off. You’ll find him on a hill just south of Lookout Landing. Return with the horse and the NPC will say that you can keep him.

Other Mounts and Epona

You can summon Link’s trusty companion Epona instantly if you have a Link Amiibo and scan it with your Switch. You can find Epona when you visit your first stable if you do not own the Amiibo.

Much like in Breath of the Wild, there are other mounts you can obtain in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom such as Deers, Bears, and other interesting and fun variations that are spread throughout the game. Mount up and get ready to travel as fast as you can across Hyrule and beyond.
