In previous iterations, running the football has been challenging. That is supposed to have been alleviated in Madden 24. With new blocking mechanics, running the ball is now easier than ever. That doesn’t mean it’s as straightforward as one might think. On the contrary, it’s still a complex way to play the game.

Running the ball is less rewarding than passing and arguably more challenging. Despite that, it’s still a very valuable part of your offensive game plan. That means it’s very important to know how to do it. These tips and tricks aren’t guaranteed to generate success, but they will help you run better.

How do I run in Madden 24?

Running in Madden 24 can be complicated, but it can be a great way to keep the defense off balance and generate positive yardage. The first and perhaps most important tip for running the ball in Madden NFL is to be patient.

The best NFL running backs exhibit great patience behind their offensive line. Madden’s gameplay doesn’t always allow for that, but patience is still key. When you get the ball, do not hold down the sprint button. This is an easy thing that everyone does, but it’s important to wait.

The blockers should be carving out a hole in the offensive line. When that hole appears, sprint through it. If it doesn’t, move forward towards it slowly as you wait as long as you can. If it never materializes, find any space and spring to and through that.

Use runs that work with your offensive lineman archetypes and other personnel. If you have great interior linemen (centers and guards), then interior runs like HB Dive or HB Power O will workIf your tackles are good, try HB Counter, HB Stretch, or even HB Toss. These are all useful run plays. New plays can keep the defense on its toes, too.

It’s always good to remember that a ball carrier can only do as well as the line in front of him. If defenders get into the backfield, even a top-rated running back like Christian McCaffrey will struggle. With a good line, the running back will succeed and be able to run for a touchdown into the end zone more often than not.

Knowing when to run is also important. Running on longer or medium down and distance plays can surprise the defense and get more yardage than it normally would. Even the smarter AI can’t predict what you’re going to do on offense.

Take note of where the linebackers and defensive backs are. If they’re up near the line or in the box, there’s a good chance that the defense expects a run. It won’t work as well, so you may want to consider calling an audible.

Time your moves precisely. When running in the open field, you will have the opportunity to juke. Doing so at the right time is key. If you mistime it, you’ll be tackled or worse- fumbles can occur. If you time it correctly, you can change the momentum and keep the play going against the CPU opponent’s defense. Stay to the sideline, too. This way you can avoid big hits and there are fewer defenders around.

Mobile QBs are vital to a run game as well. Having a second player who can run in the backfield is always something that causes frustration for a defense.

EA Sports Madden 24, featuring stars like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, is currently available from August 18 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC for football fans everywhere.
