Some teams in Madden 24 have a lot of depth or have similarly rated backups and starters. You may want to bring in the speedy wide receiver on third and long, but if he’s fifth on the depth chart, he won’t come out for the play. You may also prefer using Andy Dalton’s play style (72 overall) to Bryce Young’s (74 overall) with the Carolina Panthers.

For whatever reason, it can be useful to substitute players manually instead of relying on the CPU to adjust. Fortunately, it’s not that difficult to bring players in and out of a lineup in Madden. Here’s how to do just that.

How can I sub players in Madden NFL 24?

There are two ways to substitute players in EA Sports’ Madden 24. The first one is by visiting the depth chart. You can do this whenever a play is not active. Before selecting your next play, pause the game. Head over to the Coaching tab and select the Depth Chart option from the new menu.

When you’re there, there is a page for every single position. You can select a player and move them up or down the depth chart. If you want to bring in Andy Dalton as mentioned before, simply select him, move up to Bryce Young’s name, and select him. That will swap the two. It’s the same for every single position on the depth chart. If you’re in Franchise Mode, there is a page for the depth chart where you can reorder it. and have it stay that way going forward.

For a certain play, this can be done from the playbook as well. To do this, you will need to head to the formation tab of the menu when selecting a play. Select the right formation and find the play. There will be a button at the bottom of the user interface that allows you to change players for this play. It’s Y on an Xbox, but it will say “substitution” regardless. Use that button to make changes to personnel for that play. If you need a faster wide receiver, you can sub them in to counter the defense this way.

Select it and change the player(s) you want to. For this play, the subs will change. You can do this for any play. The catch is that you can’t sub players out of position. A running back can’t be subbed in at wide receiver or vice versa. A defender also can’t normally come in on offense. They have to be on the depth chart for the position in some way (like a tight end being a low-depth fullback). It removes some creativity since an NFL team could do whatever they wanted, but it makes sense for a video game. You also can’t put offensive players on defense, so a quarterback cannot come out as a linebacker.

You can’t make substitutions in Face of the Franchise or Superstar mode since you only control one player. Madden NFL 24 is available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.
