MLB The Show 23 has a lot of unique features and controls. When playing baseball, there are a lot of different things you can do and the video game does its best to reflect that. There are a variety of swings, slides, dives, and pick-off moves. Picking off a runner can be difficult, but there are ways to improve your chances.

In the MLB, it’s very difficult to pick someone off- unless you’re a left-handed pitcher. A lefty’s natural motion to the plate briefly looks like they’re moving towards first. It can be difficult to get a good jump. If they lean towards first even further, it’s called a slide step and it’s very difficult to read as a base runner. Naturally, this is doable in MLB The Show 23, but it’s not straightforward. Here’s how to do it.

How can I slide step in MLB the Show 23?

There is pretty much only one way of doing a slide step and that is with a left-handed pitcher with a runner on first base. A right-handed pitcher could slide step to third, but no one steals home in a video game and pitchers rarely ever even try a pick-off throw to third.

If you get into this situation, there’s one controller trick (MLB The Show 23 isn’t on PC) to slide stepping. Picking off requires the left trigger to be held down and a base thrown to. When you’re throwing a pitch, hold that left trigger.

Follow these steps:

  1. Select a pitch
  2. Aim it
  3. Select to throw it there
  4. Begin holding down the left trigger
  5. Time the bar
  6. Release and throw the pitch

As long as you continue holding down the trigger, your pitcher will feint like he’s throwing over to first before swinging back toward the plate and hopefully delivering a strike.

The slide step mechanic is very useful to keep pesky baserunners closer to first and prevent them from stealing. Instead of wasting a pitch throwing a pitchout, use a slide step if you think the runner is preparing to steal second base.
