Throwing down a dunk in NBA 2K24 is one of the most exciting things you can do in this game. Doing so off of a flashy pass is even more fun, so the alley-oop is a popular feature that many players try and work into their gameplay. It’s a little easier said than done, but there’s a lot of different times you can do it. Here are the controls for doing so.

How can I throw an alley-oop in NBA 2K24?

The alley-oop is one of the most exciting plays in NBA 2K24, involving a fun lob pass that’s grabbed and thrown down by a high-flying player. Those who can jump higher are often better at dunking, which helps for this play.

When you are in a situation where an alley-oop pass will work, or you’re just feeling risky and want to go for it anyway, you need to do the following:

  • On Xbox, double-tap Y button quickly.
  • On PlayStation, double-tap triangle rapidly.
  • On Nintendo Switch, double-tap X.

After that, you will need to hold down the shoot button (press X on the Xbox, for example) for the other player to catch and finish the alley-oop within the dunk meter. In previous iterations of NBA 2K, all you had to do was throw the pass, but that’s not the case anymore. It’s more challenging and realistic this way.

For MyPLAYER, you can request an alley-oop by following the same controls. Passing the alley-oop to a CPU-controlled teammate remains the same.

There are a few things that need to be in place for you to do a successful alley-oop, though. For one, you need to have a teammate near the hoop. This can be off of a pick and roll play, or just to the big man who naturally stays down low.

Your left stick needs to be directed towards the teammate, too. Otherwise, you may end up lobbing a pass to someone on the corner, which is decidedly less exciting. A high dunk rating (or an applicable badge) on the teammate, or good jumping/athletic attributes is helpful, too.

Your player being a good passer helps, too. It’s also best if there’s no defender near the rim. This is why good execution of the pick and roll can leave you plenty of opportunities for an alley-oop play. A clear path is also a good time to pull this out.

The bounce pass alley-oop is much more difficult to pull off:

  • Xbox: Push A + B and point towards the teammate.
  • PlayStation: Press X + O and point towards the teammate.

A self alley-oop, perhaps the flashiest play in the game, can also be achieved:

  • Xbox: Double-tap Y and run towards the hoop.
  • PlayStation: Double-tap Triangle and run towards the basket.
  • Nintendo Switch: Double-tap X and move towards the basket.

NBA 2K24 is out now.
