What is a Marker?

There are two Markers in Dead Space, one is Black (original Marker) and one is Red (man-made Marker).

Within the Dead Space universe the Black Marker is an obelisk; an ancient alien artefact of unknown origin and age. The Black Marker is in fact so old that it not only pre-dates human civilisation, but could potentially pre-date all life on earth entirely.

200 years before the events of Dead Space, the Black Marker was uncovered on Earth. This is where it had resided, completely dormant for thousands of years. Knowledge of its existence was subsequently suppressed by the government.

The reason this knowledge was kept under wraps as the Black Marker is incredibly dangerous. It will emit an electro-magnetic signal that can affect human both alive and dead, and cause nigh-on madness in individuals. By being able to manipulate flesh with telepathy and microscopic pathogens, the Markers are responsible for the creation of the Necromorphs.

This is the orginal Marker, but another one was made by humans.

In order to study the Black Marker with implicit safety, an exact replica was constructed. This is called the Red Marker. This is the one that appears in Dead Space.

The Red Marker was transported to a distant and barren planet named Aegis VII. The experiments that took place on this Marker are responsible for a Necromorph outbreak and the creation of the Hive Mind.

Sealing this mistake under the surface of Aegis VII, it would only be later discovered in 2508 by Isaac Clarke and the other members of the mining vessel, the USG Ishimura after cracking the planet open.

The Markers Dead Space origin

Whilst the origin of the Red Marker is known, the Black Marker’s origin still remains a mystery. Whilst you could argue that the Black Marker is responsible for making the Necromophs, it has no intelligent mind of it’s own.

This means that another intelligent lifeform must have created the Black Marker. What this lifeform is still remains a mystery.
