There are plenty of years between the two cards and many changes, but you may still wonder precisely what. That’s why we’re looking at the 4070 Ti Super vs 1080 Ti, which could be a great upgrade path for you or a strong choice for your next best GPU.

The first out of the two cards is of course the GTX 1080 Ti, the top choice from the Pascal era, it packed a punch then and is likely still being run by many gamers out there. Coming out in March 2017 it was the last generation before the RTX series began. Whereas the RTX 4070 Ti Super was released in January 2024, it came as part of the Super upgrade for the Ada generation. 4070 Ti Super vs 1080 Ti specs

Comparing the 1080 Ti vs 4070 Ti Super specs we can see how things have changed over the years. The main thing is the changes in architecture, in the seven years between them the process has changed drastically. It has stayed with TSMC even when changing between, it has gone down to a 5nm process from the 16 in the 1080 Ti, allowing a much smaller and condensed die.

In particular, the 80 Ti has a density of 25.1M/mm² for its transistors on its 471mm² die and is able to fit in 3,584 CUDA cores. The 70 Ti Super has a 121.1M/mm² density and the 379mm² die has 8,448 cores in it. Even without the efficiency and performance improvements, it more than doubles the processing capabilities. That is nearly the case for the clock speed as well, as the 40 series can achieve well over 2GHz whilst the 10 series maxes out before 1.6GHz, possibly pushing that with any potential GPU overclock, but would still be a whole 1,000MHz slower.

That also applies to the memory setup of the cards as well. The 4070 Ti Super massively improves the capacity and bandwidth. Although 11GB might have been a lot in 2017, now the 70 Ti increases it up to 16GB as textures and resolutions challenge the lower limits. Helped with the introduction of GDDR6X as well, the memory clock is doubled up to 22Gbps, and even with a narrower bus, the bandwidth is up to 716.8GB/s instead of 484.4GB/s. This doesn’t even come at a too high power cost with the 4070 Ti Super running 35W higher than the 1080 Ti.

How much better is the 4070 Ti Super than the 1080 Ti?

Since the Pascal card is a bit older, it’s not as common to find in reviews and comparisons from our usual sources and favorites to read and watch. But we can extrapolate, as Testing Games on YouTube has given us a look at how the GTX 1080 Ti vs 4070 Ti compare, and we can add that to our knowledge of the RTX 4070 Ti Super vs 4070 Ti to show you the expectation.

In the games tested, the 4070 Ti runs around double the framerate of the 1080 Ti, specifically 92-163% better. This is at 4K and so does impact the 1080 Ti a lot more. But the Super does increase that a bit further so you can expect the 4070 Ti Super to be 2-2.5x better than the 1080 Ti in performance.

How much more expensive is the 4070 Ti Super than the 1080 Ti?

Comparing the two launch prices we get a good look at the differences you’d pay for the two graphics cards. On launch the GTX 1080 Ti would cost you $699, and amazingly even though the 4070 Ti Super is a lower-tier model it has an MSRP of $799. That makes the 70 Ti Super 14% more expensive than the 1080 Ti. However, if you were interested in the 10 series now, there are models available for around $300 on Amazon, which would make the 70 Ti Super more than double the price.

Is the RTX 4070 Ti Super worth it over the 1080 Ti?

With the generational improvements over the years, the 4070 Ti Super is certainly a worthy upgrade over the 1080 Ti. With all the improvements and additional features of the newer generations, it is certainly the better choice to go for these days. The ray tracing capabilities of the RTX family along with the addition of DLSS 3 and upscaling capabilities make it a longer-lasting investment. Especially as the 1080 Ti is the end of its life and it wouldn’t be a long-term solution. Although the 70 Ti Super is more expensive so looking at another Nvidia GPU could be a good alternative, or even a console like the PS5 if you want 4K gaming for cheaper.
