The March 2022 update to AMD’s software brings with it another update to the name bringing back the Adrenalin edition name. It also brings driver version 22.3.1 which adds a whole bunch of new features into the mix. It finally brings Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) to the field, along with a much improved AMD Link and a promise for FSR 2.0 soon.

AMD’s software and drivers have been constantly improving. Providing constant updates provides game-ready drivers and plenty of performance improvements. Now it brings even more variety options with the introduction of these new features in the Adrenalin Edition update.

What is RSR?

Radeon Super Resolution takes what FSR has to offer and brings it to any game. It integrates its FSR-like technology into the base graphics driver. This allows it to be applied to any software that changes resolutions. After being announced so long ago, it finally arrived in the March 2022 AMD software update.

It requires a game to be run full screen or at least at the same aspect ratio. Then when it is enabled, and you change the game resolution below your displays native, it will automatically upscale it. So it means running the game at that lower resolution but making it look like your native.

So it brings great performance uplifts equivalent to FSR to any game. However, unlike FSR it isn’t available to all platforms. While also requiring an RX 5000 series or newer AMD Radeon graphics card. Likely due to the fact you do need the software which needs an AMD GPU. And if you’re looking to use it, check out our guide on how to enable RSR.

What’s new with FSR 2.0?

FSR 2.0 is a further improvement to the initial FidelityFX Super Resolution. It’s a technology similar to Nvidia’s DLSS that renders the game at a lower resolution and upscales it for better performance. Unlike DLSS it doesn’t use AI for improving quality as effectively, leading to this new update. It does have the benefit of not being limited to its own card and just requires easy implementation into the game.

Not included in this AMD software update it will be coming out at some point in Q2 with further information at AMD’s GDC talk on the 23rd. This new update is attempting to bring that fight closer to Nvidia and improve upon its accessible software. To do that AMD is promising similar or better than native image quality using temporal data along with optimized anti-aliasing. Bringing a better image quality over their previous version.

The new version also does not require the use of dedicated Machine Learning hardware. With the added benefit that it is supported by any hardware as long as the game implements the feature.

What’s the difference between FSR vs RSR?

FSRRSR

The new AMD software Adrenalin edition brings with it an update and refreshes to AMD Link. It brings you the ability to stream your PC to a wide range of devices. With the update comes the ability to stream to Apple and Android TVs, and mobile devices, but also PCs with AMD Radeon graphics. There is also the ability to use voice recognition for control as well as viewing the performance metrics.

Now there is also the Link Game feature, which allows another person to connect to your PC and become a second controller. This works for games supporting local multiplayer gaming and opens up the field for fun couch coop from afar. It also now allows for 4-way multiplayer across plenty of devices to gather your whole squad. If you’re looking to use this feature check out our guide on how to use AMD Link.
