Ubisoft Announces Viking-Themed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Cinematic Trailer Drops Later Today

Yesterday, Ubisoft unveiled the next entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Dubbed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the game jumps from the Aegean Sea of Odyssey to the icy Fjords of Scandinavia, with a Viking theme. Rumors suggested as much, but Ubisoft provided firm confirmation of the setting.

Ubisoft took a rather creative approach to the reveal, pitting viewers in front of a live-streamed Photoshop project helmed by digital artist BossLogic. Over the course of eight hours or so, the artist slowly pieced together key art revealing the setting for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Tracks from previous games soundtracked the stream before switching to a distinctly Viking-themed sonic arrangement as it neared its end.

While certainly taxing in terms of time, viewers weren’t disappointed as the image evolved into a scene depicting Viking longboats sailing waters and a battle on a grassy hillock overlocked by a burning castle separated by a bearded Viking armed with an ax. The two different landscapes suggest players will explore both the icy lands of the Viking homeland as well as embark on voyages to more clement areas further south, much as they did historically.

The creation of the artwork culminated with the reveal of the title – Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Following the live stream, Ubisoft Montreal took to Twitter to reveal that the game is a collaborative effort from no less than fifteen of Ubisoft’s thirty worldwide studios. The suggestion is that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be one massive game both in terms of its open-world and playtime, upping the already expansive standards established by Odyssey.

Ubisoft also revealed that we don’t have to wait long at all to learn more about Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The developer is premiering a cinematic trailer later on today. Interested parties can tune in from 8 am PT/4 pm GMT on Ubisoft’s YouTube and Twitch channels to catch what we presume we’ll be a mood-setting first glimpse at the game.
