OLED TVs are definitely some of the best on the market, but they’re certainly more fragile than your average LED display. They’re extremely thin and susceptible to burn-in under extreme conditions. Additionally, they can also be damaged by excessive heat, something one Reddit user has discovered (potentially) as the result of their PS5 blasting hot air over a prolonged period.

The TV in question is the LG G2, which features a fantastic OLED evo panel. The ‘gallery edition’ is a premium choice even to this day. You need to be careful though – other brands like Sony have advised keeping your OLED away from direct sunlight, and even though they don’t mention heat specifically, it will definitely have a negative effect.

Unfortunately for Reddit user u/jorjbrinaj, they may have had a part in causing some damage to their LG G2 OLED TV, just a couple of months after warranty expired. There is some debating going on in this Reddit thread, but it is at least a cautionary tale to keep in mind if you’re upgrading to an OLED.

They say that a 3-day gaming binge (thanks to FF7 rebirth) has left their OLED panel with visible vertical lines right by where their PS5 has been sat, a console that can produce plenty of heat. This understandably leads to a theory that the PlayStation has played a part in damaging the screen. On the other hand, many comments have chimed in with doubt over this, as it could just be a coincidence and has been reported to have happened seemingly at random.

Should I still get an OLED TV?

There’s no doubt that OLED TVs provide life-like visuals, excellent responsiveness, and great HDR support. In our eyes, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. There’s a reason why OLEDs generally occupy our best gaming TV guide, and they’re also the best for dealing with motion blur in fast-paced sports or games.

Despite this word of caution, there are plenty of protections in place to keep this popular panel type relevant. Top brands implement tech to reduce the risk of image retention or burn-in, but you may just want to keep your red-hot console away from the display for good measure as well.
