It’s not that long since we found out that Intel was leaving behind the small form factor computers. These are small and handy little PCs, with compact, upgradeable, and even powerful designs. But just as the news settled, some more information on those as ASUS Seems to be taking over the business of them instead.
As reported by Serve The Home on the 11th of July, Intel notified around that it would stop direct investment in the Next Unit of Compute business. A confirmation followed later on that, in fact, it was pulling out but ensured a smooth transition and fulfillment of its obligations. Since it produces the whole mini PC not just the chips that would likely mean an end to these.
However, intel just announced it would be passing on the reigns to ASUS instead. The company agreed to sell and support the NUC 10th to 13th gen systems and to develop future designs. This will continue the product line and not just end the design, as although they might not be the strongest and best gaming PCs they still provide to a niche audience that have a use for it.
This is a non-exclusive license to the design line and so you can expect other options other than ASUS on offer. As others like ASRock and Gigabyte also create a product in the lineup. Although without Intel’s contribution, we wouldn’t get the likes of the Canyon series also integrates the Intel Arc range into it.
The agreement does include ASUS developing the ASUS NUC BU which is the business unit responsible for it. Solidifying the future of these systems, including the likelihood of a 14th gen based PC.
