Followers are a big thing for influencers obviously, and after TikTok star, Sienna Mae Gomez saw her numbers plummet over 300k in a single night. The popular social media influencer has confronted claims of sexual assault head-on in a blog today titled “Sienna Mae Gomez: Reflections from an 18-Year Old Me” – Having recently turned 18 and being able to make decisions for herself she has broken free of the lawyer advice to front up to what has been happening surrounding here of late.

Last May (2021) fellow ‘influencer’ and ‘Hype House’ occupant Jack Wright’s friend Mason Rizzo accused Gomez of sexually assaulting Wright while he was unconscious. In a video posted on 20th January Wright revisited his accusations and since then, all internet hell has broken loose.

What is the Hype House?

The Hype House is in Los Angeles and is a mansion where a collective of teenage Tik Tok stars make videos together. It was recently featured in a new Netflix series that premiered at the beginning of the month. Both Gomez and Wright were occupants of the Hype House at the time of the accusations.

Sienna Mae Gomez Medium blog post – what happened to Sienna Mae?

Gomez took to blogging content platform Medium for her post, saying: “I’m devastated that he made me sound crazy and twisted so many things out of context in his most recent video, to the point of literally painting me into the “loud”, “crazy”, “overly sexualized” stereotype that people try to use on young, especially Latina, women. It sucks and I’m still unpacking that.”

“All Jack and I ever did was kiss. I have never seen, felt, or touched him naked. We spent several nights at the Hype House together but I never grabbed him asleep or awake. Yet I’m still being called a “rapist” across the internet by those who don’t understand the meaning of the word.”

“I understand now that when you’re in a relationship, there needs to be a very open and honest conversation about consent even before sexual acts, even if it’s holding hands, hugging, and being affectionate in a friendly manner.”

Sienna Mae Gomez statement & apology

In what could pass as an apology in some quarters Gomez concluded her blog with, “Jack, if you are reading this: I apologize if there were times that I made you feel uncomfortable. I am sorry if anything I ever did triggered other things you have experienced or any feelings of discomfort. But anything I did, I did unknowingly, as our physical relationship on camera was one of closeness and familiarity that I had known to carry into our “real” lives. That said, there is a distinct line between that and sexual assault. I’m so sad that this is where we ended up, and even more so that I’m now being used in a new and even more hurtful way.”

Is it enough?

Clearly not as Gomez’s follower numbers continue to plummet. A hugely serious and damaging accusation to somebody with close to 15 million followers won’t go away and nor should it. Although whether it should be played out so publically is also up for debate. This week now we have had this and the JiDion / Pokemane / Ninja drama and ultimately these are all young influencers who, when caught in the glare of the spotlight aren’t mature enough to do anything but continue to lash out, thus setting an example to their younger audiences that any of this is acceptable.
