Bethesda’s much anticipated open-world space exploration game, Starfield, takes players into a vast universe filled with adventures, mysteries, and skill development. When you start your journey among the stars, you might wonder if you can respec your skills.

Make sure Starfield is exactly as you want it, from the correct FOV and the right background. We’ll answer whether you can respec skills in Starfield in this article and look at some strategies to make the best of your gameplay.

Can You Respec Skills in Starfield?

The short and straightforward answer is no, you cannot respec your skills in Starfield. Once skill points are allocated to specific abilities, there’s no way to reset or redistribute them. At least within the constraints of your current playthrough, your skill development choices are permanent.

Is There a Way to Restart Your Skills in Starfield?

Like other Bethesda games like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, Starfield doesn’t let you respec. Instead, the game encourages players to think carefully about their skill choices at the start and adapt their strategies as they go.

You can’t reset or respec your skills directly, but there are a few things you can do to maximize your character’s potential:

  1. Skill Points in Reserve: It’s a good idea to keep a few skill points in reserve – around three to four – whenever possible. You’ll be able to adapt to unforeseen challenges or situations that may require skills you haven’t acquired yet.
  2. Save Files: Before purchasing new skills, create a save file. Try out the new skills and see if they fit your style. You can go back to your previous save if they don’t.
  3. Companion Skills: Your companions have their own unique skills that complement your character’s. By leveraging companion skills, you can compensate for skills you don’t have.
  4. Choose the Right Skills: Decide which skills you want early on based on your playstyle and character build. There are some skills that are more valuable than others, so choose wisely.
  5. Background Selection: When you choose your character’s background, a few skills are automatically unlocked. Consult guides on the best backgrounds for your playstyle if you’re not sure what skills to pick.
  6. No Level Cap: Starfield doesn’t impose a level cap, meaning you can eventually unlock every skill in the game. Keep in mind that leveling becomes slower as you progress, so focusing on essential skills early is wise.
  7. Skill Tiers: To advance in a skill, you have to do things related to it and they don’t apply retroactively. The best way to prepare for tier requirements is to invest in a skill early.
