AMD is about to launch another RX 7000 series GPU worldwide – the RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition), which has previously only been available in China since last July. With the MSRP set at $549, it’s a cut below the new RTX 4070 Super and directly competes with the now-discounted 4070, delivering better performance according to current benchmarks.
The RX 7900 GRE isn’t a brand-new graphics card, but it is finally launching for the rest of the world on February 27th, making it new to most of us. With the 4070 Super offering a new and improved version of the original, many will find that the older SKU isn’t worth thinking about. Even with Nvidia dropping the price, the 7900 GRE offers excellent price to performance in comparison.
AMD is launching RX 7900 GRE worldwide
As we mentioned, the less power-hungry RX 7900 GRE is now getting a global launch on February 27th. It has previously only been available in China since July 28th, 2023, so it has been a long time coming for anyone that wants a card that sits between the 7800 XT and 7900 XT.
Since the card has been available elsewhere in the world, some benchmarks have already been released. First though, we can look at the specifications and official performance results from AMD.

Architecture | RDNA 3 |
Shading units | 5120 |
Base clock | 1.2GHz |
Boost clock | 2.2GHz |
VRAM | 16GB GDDR6 |

RX 7900 GRE worth it over the RTX 4070?
VideoCardz have revealed that the RX 7900 GRE will offer 14% more FPS on average at 1440p max settings than the RTX 4070, giving the AMD graphics card the edge when comparing the performance of these two one-to-one. Other benchmarks we’ve spotted also show that the GRE outperforms the 4070 across all resolutions on average, though the Nvidia card can have the edge in raytracing scenarios.
The GRE even looks to be a solid competition for the 4070 Super, so we think it offers excellent value for money when we compare the cost. The Super retails for around $599, whereas the GRE and original RTX 4070 will set you back just $549 based on MSRP.
