Why is Basim missing a finger in Assassin’s Creed Mirage? Ubisoft has created a massive timeline with the Assassin’s Creed games with the latest one taking place in Baghdad shortly before the events of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

In older Assassin’s Creed games, you may have noticed that the protagonist is missing their ring finger. Characters like Altair cut off their finger while others like Bayek still have all their fingers. Depending on the games you played, you may have never seen this trend.

There are many questions surrounding Assassin’s Creed Mirage such as where it takes place, who trained Basim Ibn Ishaq, and if Altair is in the game. Perhaps one of the biggest questions involves Basim’s finger. Why does Basim have a finger missing in Assassin’s Creed Mirage?

Why is Basim missing a finger in Assassin’s Creed Mirage?

The reason for Basim’s missing finger is the Hidden Blade. When becoming a member of the Assassin Brotherhood, a ritual is typically performed where the initiate cuts off their ring finger. This is to show dedication to the brotherhood and to also help with their stealth abilities.

Originally, the hidden blade was meant to be used with a closed fist. This would allow the blade, affixed to a spring-loaded mechanism, to pop out of the hole created by the missing ring finger and go back without needing the user to move their hand.

Later games in the franchise had the hidden blade reworked so that the sacrifice of the ring finger was no longer required. That is the reason why some assassins are missing a finger and others like Eivor from Valhalla are not.

Basim is one of the most versatile of the assassins and has multiple tools at his disposal such as throwing knives and smoke bombs. He even has an eagle that accompanies him. Mirage’s story focuses on how Basim went from being a simple pickpocket to a master deadly assassin and a powerful side character in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
