Do you want to learn how to kill Commander Zhalk in Baldur’s Gate 3? Larian Studios Commander Zhalk has heavy armor and plenty of health; however, he will be in battle with the Mind Flayer. This works extensively to your advantage as you can use the Mind Flayer as cannon fodder while you prepare your potions or scrolls for battle.

During your adventure, you will meet many companions needing your help, whether in the Goblin Camp or near your bedrolls in the Forgotten Realms. Soon after, they will be vital to your team, in which you can also romance them during full long rests! But of course, to first do that, you must first deal with some pest control. This guide will detail how to kill Commander Zhalk in Baldur’s Gate 3 with a single playthrough.

Defeat commander Zhalk in Baldur’s Gate 3

Commander Zhalk is a boss part of a major plot you will meet in Act 1 of the quest Escape the Nautiloid after the prologue. During this quest, Commander Zhalk is fighting a Mind Flayer, trying to nibble on his brain. Zhalk will spend most of his time defeating the Mind Flayer, so prioritize healing the Mind Flayer to take the attention off of you. However, he will use the Imps and Lesser Hellboars to defeat you in Baldur’s Gate III.

As mentioned above, Zhalk will be preoccupied with the Mind Flayer. During this time, defeat the minions and save your game. In preparation for your Commander Zhalk battle, ensure you have picked up the Nautiloid Tank when you free Shadowheart from the pod. After this, equip the Command spell. Additionally, before you head into battle, use Shadowheart’s Bless spell.

If you have a Paladin class, you can cast Divine Sense to gain an advantage on attack rolls against celestials and the undead. Additionally, ensure your Warlocks, Wizards, or Druids use offensive spells like lightning to weave through the Mind Flayers’ attacks.

Next, ensure you have positioned the party character Lae’zel near Commander Zhalk and obtain the remaining Nautiliod Tanks. Once you do this, use the Command: Drop spell on Commander Zhalk. Now that Zhalk has dropped the Everburn Blade equip it to Lae’zel or any Fighter character you have.

After this, Zhalk will be ThreatenedDazed, and Stunned; use any spells to bring his health down. During this time, Zhalk and the Mind Flayer will hit one another with an Unarmed Strike. Resist the urge to go up the second flight of stairs; it will trigger more enemies!

Note: Zhalk has high defenses and is resistant to various types of damage. However, with Lae’zel equipped with the Everburn Blade Greatsword, she can pack a punch with the flaming sword. Additionally, you will only have 15 turns to defeat Zhalk. Within this time, reinforcements will arrive; however, these opponents will only come later in the battle.

Once you and the Mind Flayer made a reasonable amount of damage, place the Nautiliod Tanks around Zhalk when his health is below 35. You can now ignite the Tanks with a bow and escape with your XP and Greatsword. Once you kill Commander Zhalk, the Mind Flayer will lock on you.

You can receive these achievements if you complete the following, completing the game in Tactician mode will give you the Critical Hit achievement. Taking control of the Nautiloid will give you Descent From Avernus.
