In this guide we’ll address whether you should pick an origin or custom character in Baldur’s Gate 3! There are endless customization options when it comes to Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios. It’s already a hit with fans the sheer amount of variety you can get with your playable hero.

You can choose your race, your class, and even your backstory in the game as a bonus. But, you can also choose an origin character, with preset characteristics and appearances to play through the story with.

So, which one should you pick? Should you pick an origin or create a custom character in Baldur’s Gate 3? We’re here to let you know all the details.

Origin vs Custom – Which Should You Choose?

While you are free to make your choice, as there’s no penalty for deciding to pick an origin or creating a custom character, we’d recommend creating a custom character for your first playthrough of the RPG.

Not only will you be able to choose nearly everything about your character from combat style down to general appearance, the origin characters can still be picked up as you journey through the story. You will still find all these characters in the game if you don’t choose them, just like Divinity Original Sin, also from Larian Studios:

  • Shadowheart
  • Gale
  • Wyll
  • Astarion
  • Lae’zel
  • Karlach

They will all appear as companions. So they’re not totally lost.

There is also the Dark Urge origin, however, this origin is more of a set background than a fully-fledged character and doesn’t appear as a companion if you don’t choose to play through it. The entire origin system besides the Dark Urge origin will still appear in-game, and you can always play through them later in a new game.

What is the difference in choosing a custom character?

By creating your own character, any type you want is available to you; a half-elf cleric, a Githyanki fighter, a vampire spawn, a human warlock, human wizard, a high-elf rogue, or anything else you can imagine. You’ll be able to choose dialogue options and interactions regardless if you choose an origin character or your own custom character, but the experience is made particularly unique by creating your own backstory and appearance.

There’s a ton of exploring, survival, unique quests, and magic in Baldur’s Gate 3 regardless of whether you decide to pick an origin character or create a custom one, so the choice is really up to you.
