When it comes to building a custom character in Baldur’s Gate 3, you have many options that can change your look and what bonuses you start off with. Some races begin the game knowing additional magic spells while others get the addition of darkvision to help them see in caves.

Baldur’s Gate has plenty of companions you can romance, which will help you immensely as you progress through the game. But first, you need to build a character. There are many options to choose from with tons of races and classes. This guide will give you a best classes tier list for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – Classes Tier List

We first need to take into consideration the Race you may choose. These Races will determine your characteristics and capabilities. For example, an Elf will have Darkvision and longsword proficiency. At the same time, a Dwarf will have a base running speed.

A – TierPaladin, Sorcerer, Barbarian, Wizard, Warlock
B – TierDruid, Rogue, Fighter
C – TierRanger, Monk

S Tier Classes in Baldur’s Gate 3

Bard

Bards are sturdy and adventurous and have mastered the art of song and magic. Of course, once again, this will be the Wood Half-Elf. With Keen Sense and Fey Ancestry, the subclass College of Lore will work well in this build. Along with additional proficiencies such as Arcana, Intimidation, and Sleight of Hand, your Bard will be dishing out damage toward any fiend. This class is versatile due to its Charisma; it will also serve as an excellent support for spellcasting.

Many Bards will focus on being a more utility-focused class. This means that they are casters that typically throw out buffs and debuffs that help in and out of combat. Bards are able to match almost any playstyle thanks to their versatility. If you want a more combat-focused Bard, you can choose the College of Swords which will give you greater combat prowess.

Cleric

Upon choosing a Cleric, players must pick a Deity to worship. This will be important throughout the game, as certain characters react strongly toward a Deity. Though, we recommend the Human Race as your build for a Cleric. You will gain +1 for all the racial features, but this Race can also work with any Class. We also suggest you choose the Light Domain as a subclass. Your Cleric will become a powerful spellcaster based on which Deity you select at the beginning of the game.

If you want a Cleric that is more healing-focused, going with the Life Domain is key. This will allow you to not only enchant items but heal allies consistently. If you want to aid your allies if other ways, you can choose the Trickery Domain. This allows you to create illusions to fool enemies.

A Tier Classes in Baldur’s Gate 3

Wizard

The best build for Wizard is the Race: Drow and Subclass Evocation School. An Evocation School subclass will focus elemental energy into powerful attacks and enhancements. Due to the primary ability of the Wizard being Intelligence, you should obtain the Warped Headband of Intellect to boost this. Not only will this increase your hit chances when casting spells, but it will also enhance your defenses.

The Drow will also give you Super Darkvision, and when you use Fleet of Foot and Mask of the Wild, it will boost your speed and Stealth proficiency. Wizards specialize in individual schools of magic, with proficiencies in Intelligence and Wisdom; your spellbook will have a vast array of spells.

Skills: Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Intelligence, and Wisdom

Warlock

The best build for a Warlock is Race: Half-Elf and Subclass: The Great Old One. The primary ability of this Race is Charisma and Wisdom. With this build, the most crucial aspect to remember is to increase your Charisma to 16. Due to the Spellcasting ability, the higher your Charisma, the more likely you will land on a higher Charisma modifier.

When choosing Warlock, you have to choose a Race immediately. With the Half-Elf race, you can quickly reach the 16 in Charisma, Dexterity, and Constituion. As a result, you will be able to maintain your spells easier. If you’re into multiclassing, this class has plenty to offer within the low levels.

The key spell of any Warlock if you know Dungeons & Dragons is Eldritch Blast. This ability doesn’t consume spell slots and becomes more powerful as the Warlock levels up. You can even get Eldritch Invocations to make the spell move enemies and hurt them even more.

Sorcerer

Using the Race: Tiefling and Subclass: Dragonic Bloodline is best. The primary ability for Dragonic Bloodline is Charisma, and saving throw proficiencies are Constitution and Charisma. Together with the Asmodeus Tiefling traits, such as Darkvision and Hellish Resistance, the Draconic Bloodline will increase their damage. Sorcerers have plenty of raw power, which can double with this subclass.

Another good subclass for the Sorcerer is Wild Magic. This subclass gives you access to a magic pool that randomly activates, causing strange abilities on the battlefield. These abilities will often work in your favor as it can alter the ground or hurt enemies.

Paladin

A Zariel Tiefling is the best build for a Paladin. In addition, we recommend the Oath of the Ancients subclass. Since the skills are Athletics and Intimidation, together with your Thaumaturgy trait, you will manifest supernatural power with the added advantage of Intimidation and Performance checks. The Zariel Tiefling will obtain many class features and the Healing Radiance feature with the Paladin class. This class is best if you’re looking for consistent damage output and works well as a tank.

Paladins are very strong whether they are using the Oath of Devotion, or even if they become an Oathbreaker. Thanks to their use of medium armor and heavy armor, they make excellent tanks that can stand on the front line.

Barbarian

A Shield Dwarf is your best bet for the Barbarian class in Baldur’s Gate 3, and the best subclass for this is the Berserker. For this build, you should focus on Strength as it increases your chances of successfully attacking and damaging enemies. Though this Race may be slower than the rest, it has many weapon proficiencies.

The primary of the Barbarian class is its rage. While Barbarians are not able to wear many armors, they make up for it with brute strength. You won’t be wearing heavy armor but you will get extra attacks and plenty of bonus action abilities.

B Tier Classes in Baldur’s Gate 3

Rogue

The Deep Gnome is an excellent choice for the Rogue class. With Rogue, we recommend the subclass Thief. One of the few traits of the Deep Gnome is their Superior Darkvision and Stone Camouflage. Immediately, it will give you an advantage in Stealth, Hide, and Sneak Attack.

Stealth will also allow players to avoid fights entirely. In addition, because of your Superior Darkvision, you can see traps in the dark. Furthermore, you will also benefit from the skill Investigation.

The other Rogue Sublclasses are Arcane Trickster and Assassin. Depending on your playstyle, either subclass is effective in the game. Arcane Trickster gives you access to enchantment abilities and spells while Assassin makes your damage greater.

Fighter

The most obvious best choice is the Githyanki. Not only are they great Fighters, but the Eldritch Knight subclass is best used for them. The Eldritch Knight and their inherent racial features will enhance your Strength. This will allow you to deal more damage during melee attacks.

Outside of Eldritch Knight, the Champion subclass allows you to use any weapon whether it is a martial weapon or simple weapon. It also increases your critical hit range so you are more likely to hit an enemy harder. Champion is best when combined with other classes like Paladin or Barbarian. Battle Master is also good if you want to take on more of a controlling role.

Druid

As for a Druid, the best Race to use is the Gold Dwarf. Additionally, we recommend players use the Circle of the Land as a subclass. When choosing these features, you will gain +1 Wisdom. Further, the chances of your Spells hitting your opponent in combat will increase. During character creation, because of your Constitution, it will allow you to reach 16. This will help you maintain Spells that require Concentration.

Every Druid subclass is powerful but the most powerful is the Circle of the Moon. This subclass allows you to use the Wild Shape ability very effectively in combat. The Circle of Spores Druid is also powerful.

C Tier Classes in Baldur’s Gate 3

Monk

As the primary skills for a Monk are the Dexterity and Wisdom abilities, a Lightfoot Halfling would be the best Race to use. This is because a Halfling will have a +1 Dexterity score. The best subclass to go with the Monk is the Way of the Open Hand. This goes well with the Lightfoot Halfling, as it is Naturally Stealthy. This will go well with the Open Hand Technique and Wholeness of Body. Though this build will suit those who prefer a martial arts class, your damage output will be much lower. Additionally, this class does not provide many benefits outside of combat.

Ranger

The Wood Elf is the best Race for the Ranger, with proficiency, Dexterity, and Wisdom. Of course, the best subclass to use with this build is the Beast Master. With this build, players can summon companions that will fight alongside them. Since Dexterity is your primary ability, choosing this build will raise Dexterity to 17. This will influence your hit chances and damage with Dexterity-based weapons.

While Rangers aren’t the best class in the game, the Hunter subclass makes them a bit better. This allows you to get abilities like Uncanny Dodge to avoid damage and more.
