Do you want Scratch to come back to camp with you in Baldur’s Gate 3? There are multiple pets that you can get in the game like an Owlbear Cub and a puppy. Scratch is a dog found near the Owlbear cave. Unfortunately, his own has passed away and you cannot revive them.

While there are plenty of combative companions in the game, animal companions aren’t party members you can take with you. Instead, they hang around your camp and offer some stimulating conversation or the occasional pets.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a long game and there are plenty of creatures to find and companions to get. Many of the NPCs, including animals, can be interacted with. Scratch is one such animal, but he won’t budge easily. This guide will show you how to get Scratch in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to recruit Scratch in Baldur’s Gate 3

Scratch is very easy to locate. The white dog can be found to the north of the Owlbear Nest. The nest is just east of the Blighted Village and west of Druid Grove. You will see Scratch standing next to his dead owner. Before interacting with him, make sure you have a good Animal Handling skill or grab the Potion of Animal Speaking inside the Owlbear Nest.

Scratch is very protective over his master. When talking to him, you will be able to ask him what happened. It is here that you are faced with three options:

  1. [Perception] Peer at his collar
  2. [Intimidation] If I wanted to hurt either of you, I’d have done it already
  3. [Persuasion] I’m not an enemy, I promise

Peering at Scratch’s collar with a perception check and then speaking his name seems to be the fastest way to get his admiration. You can make the intimidation check but a failure will lead to a fight.

After this, you will have a few dialogue options to choose from. None of them will really lead to anything bad unless you decide to yell at his dead master. Avoid doing that and you will be able to give your scent to Scratch so he can follow you back to camp after succeeding a few dice rolls.

After making friends with Scratch, you will be able to search Gomwick’s body. Back at camp, you can pet Scratch without the need for animal handling checks. Most companions will approve of this as they are animal lovers. The only member who will disapprove is Lae’zel.

The dog Scratch is a great companion around camp. The two of you can form a good enough bond that you can use Find Familiar to summon him around the world to help you find hidden secrets and treasure. While at camp, he will occasionally bring you a pouch that will have a random item in it.
