Are you wondering if Baldur’s Gate 3 is a turn-based RPG? Past games in the series have been real-time strategy games that challenged players to think in the moment. Of course, since Baldur’s Gate 3 is made by the studio behind the Divinity Original Sin series, it is easy to see how the game could be changed up.

Larian Studios welcomes you to the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Enter the Forgotten Realms and experience combat encounters like never before. There are many classes and races to choose from. Will you combine some and multiclass?

Pick up a weapon and join the fight. Will you be fighting for the Forgotten Realms on PlayStation or Xbox? This D&D game is waiting for you. Like past games, will this one have a real-time combat system or does it use a turn-based combat system? Is Baldur’s Gate 3 turn-based?

Does Baldur’s Gate 3 use a turn based combat system?

Yes! Baldur’s Gate 3 is a turn-based combat game. Much like the Divinity Original Sin games, Baldur’s Gate 3 features turn-based combat mechanics. Your turns are broken up into various actions, bonus actions, and movements that you can take.

During a character’s turn, they will use action points or AP to complete a move action, bonus action, and standard action. Mixing the actions gives a greater degree of flexibility in combat.

There is a complexity and depth to the combat system that you won’t find in a real-time strategy game. You can keep the turn-based mode on outside of combat as well or you can exit turn-based mode to make things run smoother.

The switch to turn-based combat is appreciated since real-time combat gameplay can get a bit messy if done incorrectly. Turn-based combat allows there to be a pause between turns, giving the player time to think about the actions they want to take. After all, you don’t want to go swinging wildly at everything in your path.
