Chongyun is a 4-star Cryo Claymore character who specialises as a Cryo Support and Burst DPS hybrid, and is available on the Character Event Wish, Epitome Invocation and Wanderlust Invocation Standard Banners. Keep reading to find out what materials are needed to Ascend Chongyun, his best builds and an overview of how to use him effectively.

Chongyun Ascension Stat

All characters in Genshin Impact have a particular stat that levels up alongside their base stats. For Chongyun, this extra stat is ATK%. While not groundbreaking, this will help to increase his overall DMG.

Chongyun Ascension Materials

Once you have obtained Chongyun and maxed him to Level 20, he can be further levelled up through Ascension. The materials you will need to Ascend Chongyun are as follows:

Shivada Jade Slivers, Fragments, Chunks and Gemstones can be obtained by defeating the Cryo Regisvine, located in Mondstadt, and the Cryo Hypostasis, located in Dragonspine.

Hoarfrost Cores can be obtained by defeating the Cryo Regisvine, located in Mondstadt.

Cor Lapis can be found across Liyue. They are mainly located on Mt. Hulao, the mountainous area between Tianqiu Valley and Cuijue Slope, and Guyun Stone Forest.

Damaged Masks, Stained Masks and Ominous Masks can be obtained by defeating Hilichurls, which can be found all over Teyvat.

Chongyun Talent Materials

In order to make Chongyun stronger, you’ll need to upgrade his talents. The materials you will need are as follows:

  • Damaged Mask
  • Stained Mask
  • Ominous Mask
  • Teachings of Diligence
  • Guide to Diligence
  • Philosophies of Diligence
  • Dvalin’s Sigh

The Teachings, Guide and Philosophies of Freedom can be obtained by completing the Domain of Mastery: Heart of the Flames every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Meanwhile, Dvalin’s Sigh is a potential drop from the Weekly Stormterror Challenge.

Chongyun Best Weapons

Since Chongyun acts as both a Support and Burst DPS in one, he can make use of a wide range of weapons:

WeaponRarity
Wold’s Gravestone5-star
Skyward Pride5-star
Serpent Spine4-star
Blackcliff Slasher4-star
Sacrificial Greatsword4-star
Akuoumaru4-star
Prototype Archaic4-star
Luxurious Sea-Lord4-star
Genshin Impact Chongyun Weapon

His best in slot largely depends on what stat you need more of on him. Generally the best option for him is Wolf’s Gravestone, since it has a massive amount of ATK that will help increase his overall DMG output. However, if you’re lacking in Energy Recharge, Skyward Pride can be good on him and will give him enough ER to keep his Burst up on cooldown.

Other good options include Serpent Spine and Blackcliff Slasher, which will give Chongyun CRIT Rate and DMG respectively, which will help to increase his DPS. Like Skywared Spine, Sacrificial Greatsword will give Energy Recharge to keep Chongyun’s Burst up on cooldown. Akuoumaru is another great weapon; not only does it have plenty of ATK, but its passive will also boost Chongyun’s Burst DMG. For F2P weapons, Prototype Archaic is a solid choice as it will increase Chongyun’s overall DMG with its high ATK stats. If you have it, Luxurious Sea-Lord is another fantastic choice thanks to its high ATK% substat and a passive which boosts Elemental Burst DMG.

Chongyun Best Artifacts

Since most of Chongyun’s DMG comes from his Burst (as well as his reverse Melt capabilities,) 4-Piece Emblem of Severed Fate is a solid choice. This set will give him enough Energy Recharge to tick over his Burst (which has a low Energy Cost of 40) and will increase his Burst’s DMG based on his Max Energy Recharge. This is especially powerful when paired with a weapon with an Energy Recharge substat.

Alternatively, you could use a combination of 2-Piece Blizzard Strayer with either 2-Piece Noblesse Oblige, or 2-Piece Gladiator’s Finale / 2-Piece Shimenawa’s Reminiscence. These sets will help increase his overall DMG, not just his Burst – although 4-Piece Emblem will generally give him a higher DPS.

To lean fully into Support, you could give Chongyun 4-Piece Noblesse Oblige to both increase his Burst DMG and buff your team’s ATK after he uses his Burst.

For low-level players, 4-Piece Instructor or 2-Piece Brave Heart with 2-Piece Berserker work well until you’re able to get higher level Artifacts.

Genshin Impact Chongyun Artifacts

For your Artifact main stats, you will want to run:

ArtifactMain Stat
SandsATK% / Energy Recharge
GobletCryo DMG Bonus
CircletCRIT DMG / Rate

In terms of Artifact substats, you’ll want to focus on ATK%, Energy Recharge, Elemental Mastery and both CRIT DMG and CRIT Rate.

How to use Chongyun

His Elemental Skill, Spirit Blade: Chonghua’s Layered Frost, causes a Cryo explosion in a circular AoE in front of Chongyun that deals Cryo DMG. After a short delay, the cold air created by the Cryo explosion will coalesce into a Chonghua Frost Field, within which all Sword, Claymore and Polearm-wielding characters’ weapons will be infused with Cryo.

His Elemental Burst, Spirit Blade: Cloud-Parting Star summons 3 giant spirit blades in mid-air that fall to the earth one-by-one after a short delay, exploding as they hit the ground. When the spirit blades explode, they will deal AoE Cryo DMG and launch opponents.

Chongyun fulfills a pretty niche role as a Cryo Support and Burst DPS hybrid. His Skill is what makes him work as a Support; it applies Cryo to nearby enemies which is great for Melt Reactions, whilst the Cryo infusion it triggers can help Cryo DPS characters deal consistent Cryo DMG. This means he can be paired with characters such as Ayaka or Kaeya, who can make good use of the Cryo infusion. His Burst, on the other hand, has the potential to deal huge amounts of DMG thanks to having three (or four, if you have his C6) instances of high-scaling Cryo DMG. His Burst’s DMG can be further amplified through a reverse Melt Reaction, which requires you to apply Pyro to your enemies before activating Chongyun’s Burst.

Chongyun can work very well on two particular team comps; Freeze, or a team comp dubbed the “National Team.” In a Freeze comp, he’ll be helping your Cryo DPS Freeze enemies by infusing their Normal Attacks with Cryo; as mentioned above, Kaeya and Ayaka work very well here. You’ll also want a Hydro unit for the second part of the reaction, so Xingqiu, Kokomi or Mona are all good options. Your final slot will either be a Healer or an Anemo Support, depending on what your team needs.

In the National Team, Chongyun is used alongside Xingqiu, Xiangling and Bennett, who together can deal high amounts of Melt, Vaporize and Freeze DMG. This is a great team comp as not only is the DMG output high, but it also consists of purely 4-star characters, which makes it very accessible to all kinds of players.
