If you’re wondering how to save in Sons of the Forest, look no further! We’ll be going through how you can save and at what points, and finally where you can save the game.

But you can’t just go to the menu and click save. First, you need to do a quick bit of building by creating a shelter. Don’t worry, it’s easy. A shelter is the most basic form of something you could call a base.

How to build a shelter in Sons of the Forest

You’ll need the following items to build a shelter:

  • 1 tarp
  • 1 stick

You’ll find the tarp scavenging the containers at the helicopter crash site at the beginning of the game. Pick it up and start searching for a stick on the ground. You should see plenty of them once you’ve left the snowy starter area and descended to a lower altitude. In fact, you should be opening every last box, crate, and suitcase after surviving the crash landing. Don’t forget to assist your companion Kelvin as well!

Now onto building, here’s a step by step guide for you to follow:

  • Open your inventory by tapping the I key (by default).
  • Select or equip the tarp which will be stored in the upper right-hand corner of your inventory screen.
  • Tarp in hand, look at the ground in front of you.
  • You’ll see the outline of a square, which you can rotate with the Q and R.
  • If you’ve found your spot, left-click and you’ll place the tarp on the ground.
  • Move close and look at one corner of the tarp until you see a white, dotted-line arrow pointing up. Left-click again.
  • As long as one stick is in your inventory, you’ll see yourself prop up that corner of the tarp with the stick.
  • You’ve built a shelter, well done!

You can also prop up the rest of the corners of the shelter by using more sticks, but it’s not required.

So, we’ve shown you how to set up you shelter, but that doesn’t automatically mean your game is saved. Nor does it mean that you’re fully rested and ready to take on a new day. You’ll need to interact with the shelter to do either of these actions. When you move close to the shelter, you’ll see these two prompts.

  • Save your game (default hold E).

Can I save or sleep with enemies nearby in Sons of the Forest?

The immediate threat of nearby enemies can throw a spanner in the works most of the time during your playthrough of Sons of the Forest. Even though you’ve set up your shelter, that doesn’t mean you’re suddenly safe and sound. In fact, enemies can come and disrupt you, which is why it’s important to set up a more secure base once you have the resources to do so.

Anyway, while it’s possible to save your game with enemies nearby, the same can’t be said for sleeping. Attempting to sleep in your shelter while there are cannibals or mutants in the vicinity won’t be possible, you’ll know this via a sound cue (and the fact the time of day is unchanged and you’re still as tired as a zombie).

You’ll have to clear the area of potential threats before you can get some rest. Barricades and/or other structures to scare off cannibals come in handy. Virginia is also incredibly useful at securing your area if she is equipped with a weapon.
