Spoilers for those who have not finished the mainline story of Elden Ring.

Lots of Elden Ring fans by now are probably looking at the newest images that have been released tied to the Shadow of the Erdtree and wondering: why do you need to burn the Erdtree in Elden Ring?

Alternatively, you might also be questioning why you would do it, what the consequences of it are, and how you would go about it. We’ll be getting into all of that in this article.

What is the Erdtree in Elden Ring?

Getting to the base of the Erdtree serves as one of your primary objectives in Elden Ring, and when you get there, unfortunately, your task becomes burning it. Burning it is how you progress to the final boss of the game, Godfrey the First Elden Lord.

Once you progress Elden Ring’s story to the point where you reach the Royal Capital of Leyndell, the burning of the Erdtree will become an option. You will be barred from entering the tree by thorns. To bypass this barrier you are required to burn the Erdtree using the Great Forge in the Mountaintops of the Giants.

You have the option for yourself to burn it or you can ask Melina to do it in your place. But after that, you will trigger endgame.

What happens when you burn the Erdtree?

Immediately after have reached the Great Forge and you burn the Erdtree, this will teleport you to the Crumbling Farum Azula and triggering the endgame.

You will now be allowed to progress to Godfrey the First Elden Lord. However, aside from that, the Royal Capital of Leyndell, will be convered in ash, becoming Leyndell, the Ashen Capital. Alongside visual changes, there are some map changes too, with areas within Leyndell becoming unreachable.

Items will disappear, and areas will be blocked off, but then again, new items will also be made available too.

Finally, some NPCs at the Roundtable Hold will also die when the Erdtree is set alight so make sure your quests, some may leave, and some may stay, including our favorite blacksmith, Smithing Master Hewg.

Can you bring the Erdtree back?

In a climate of mass deforestation and drastic global warming, the thought of felling (burning) an enormous tree might not be everyone’s cup of tea. So, there is a way to reverse the damage you dish out.

If you feel guilty from destroying the Erdtree, there is a way of bringing it back to life. This is only possible though if you complete Elden Ring and get the Age of Order ending.

Will Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC be free?

Elden Ring’s Colosseum DLC was free. However, as for the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC we’re not sure. With added content and story, we’re sure that there’s a greater chance that the newest 2023 Elden Ring DLC will cost something.

Will the Erdtree be burnt in Shadow of the Erdtree DLC if you choose the Age of Order ending?

At this point in time, we do not know how the Erdtree’s state will be changed, or the entire world environment for that matter depending on what ending you choose for the game.
