Microsoft finally after so many years of users asking for the option to control their RGB devices conveniently in Windows, finally added the option to do so, introducing Ambient Lighting for Windows 11. Here’s how Windows 11 has added native RGB control.

Now, you can ditch the 4 RGB software currently controlling the northern lights that is your PC tower, and just switch to Ambient Light, right? Well, not so fast, you know it’s not going to be that easy.

Windows 11 Ambient Light for RGB devices

Microsoft announced several new features for Windows 11 at its annual developer conference, Microsoft Build, on Tuesday. Many features were mentioned. some of which we have already covered, but we’re here to talk about the new Ambient Lighting feature added to Windows 11.

Windows 11 introduces a feature called “Ambient Lighting” in its latest insider build 25370.1, which allows users to control RGB lights on their devices directly from Windows Settings. This feature aims to provide universal lighting control and enhance the PC experience by adding energy and emotion.

The ambient lighting feature can be found in Settings > Personalization > Lighting.

However, in the Insider build 25370.1, the current customization options are limited. Users can adjust brightness, effect speed, and match the lighting with the Windows accent color.

It appears that only some devices are recognized for ambient lighting in this build, while other RGB-equipped peripherals connected to the PC, such as the mouse, are not, we’re sure this is just a compatibility issue and will be fixed as the updates roll out and the feature is implemented for real in standard builds of Windows 11.

It’s worth noting that the mentioned “Dynamic Lighting” feature might be separate from the ambient lighting feature, although there is skepticism about it. The Dynamic Lighting feature is expected to be launched in a preview build for Windows Insiders in the near future. However, details about the specific capabilities and functionality of Dynamic Lighting are not provided in the given information.

Will Ambient Light replace other RGB lighting software?

No, probably not, as software like Corsair’s iCUE does much more than control the RGB of your peripherals and components. Using iCUE, you can control fans, pump speeds, and monitor temperatures. This much is also true for other software, like Armory Crate, which even goes as far as allowing you to overclock your system and control RGB lighting – even if it is a pain to install.
