A CPU made a critical error in Madden, leading to a player’s first Super Bowl victory. After 10 seasons of franchise mode, one player finally earned a hard-fought ring, but they only did so thanks to an egregious mistake by the computer opponent.

With the Kansas City Chiefs (the CPU-controlled team) losing to the Chicago Bears (user BSdawg on Reddit’s team) by a touchdown in overtime, the CPU elected to kick a field goal on fourth down. The kicker nailed the kick, but it didn’t matter because it guaranteed a loss.

With Madden overtime rules, each team gets a possession to score. After that, whoever is winning wins the game. Therefore, when the CPU was trailing by seven, a field goal should have never been a consideration- even on fourth down.

It was a long shot that the team would have converted a fourth-and-nine to stay alive, but that is the only option any team in that scenario truly has. Any NFL coach who did this would likely be fired immediately after.

The final score ended up being 38-34. The user shared to Reddit that they had been engaged in an intense, back-and-forth battle in their quest for a Super Bowl victory 10 seasons in. It was an anticlimactic ending and one that left the player feeling a bit shocked that that’s how they won it all.

“But on a crucial 4th and 9 with the Super Bowl on the line, down by a touchdown, Andy Reid’s replacement forgets how the playoffs work in overtime and kicks a game losing field goal,” the user wrote on Reddit. “What a s*** a** way to win my first Super Bowl in year 10.”

Madden 24 is likely to rectify CPU issues

Fortunately, this issue shouldn’t happen in Madden 24, though it never really should have transpired in Madden 23, either. The CPU is one thing EA Sports worked on this time around, supposedly improving player decisions and the game’s computer as a whole.

In all likelihood, this kind of mistake won’t happen in the next release, which is slated to release soon. Hopefully, when someone works so hard to win a Super Bowl, it won’t happen because of a mindless mistake.
