There isn’t long left until the RTX 4080 Super release date is here, so if you’re planning on a GPU upgrade right now, we suggest you hang fire until the new card drops. When comparing RTX 4080 Super vs RTX 4080, we discovered some valuable upgrades, so we think it could really be a popular choice for high-end builds if you don’t want to fully splash out on a RTX 4090.

To kick off the new year at CES 2024, Nvidia announced the new Super series, and the 4080 Super is finally about to be released following both the 4070 Super and 4070 Ti Super. The biggest selling point for us is the RTX 4080 Super price, which offers much better value for money than we saw with the lackluster 4080, an unpopular SKU as a result – we drew the same conclusion in our RTX 4080 review. With just a couple of days to go, here’s why Super is worth the wait.

Why you should wait for the RTX 4080 Super

The RTX 4080 Super is going to replace the 4080, upping its performance slightly. The gains aren’t going to be especially enormous, but the $200 drop in price makes the Super much better value for money than the previous model. Anyone shopping around and looking to upgrade their GPU right now should definitely consider the 4080 Super – especially if you’re interested in high refresh rate 1440p or 4K gaming.

Pick up the best monitor for RTX 4080 Super and you’ve got yourself a formidable gaming setup, as long as your other components fit the bill of course. Even if you’re more interested in a budget-friendly card like the 4060 or 4070, the release of the full Super line-up could potentially usher in some deals to tempt you further, we’ll have to wait and see though.

Should you buy the RTX 4080 or wait for 4080 Super?

The now ‘vanilla’ RTX 4080 was released back in November 2022 at an eye-watering MSRP of $1,199. This high price led many people who had the cash to spare to just go for the 4090, as the performance uplift was hard to argue against. With Nvidia practically replacing the 4080 with the new Super card, we don’t see too much reason to buy the RTX 4080 outside of a massive discount. This is likely though as retailers aim to rid their old stock after the Super comes out.

With many custom AIBs still costly, and Nvidia potentially removing the 4080 from their store in favor of the 4080 Super, we think that waiting for Super is the play here. On Nvidia’s store, the card is still sits at its recommended price, so it makes sense to wait for the Super to come along and drop the price down to just $999 for better performance per dollar. Buying a used graphics card is an alternative if you want a RTX 4080 for cheap, but quality cannot always be guaranteed.

FAQs

Is the RTX 4080 still worth buying?

Given the cheaper price tag of the RTX 4080 Super, we don’t think that the original 4080 is worth buying right now. We suggest waiting for the Super to drop and see how that affects the price of the original.

How much better is the RTX 4080 Super?

The card isn’t out just yet to compare raw benchmarks, but the specs reveal that we should see an estimated performance increase of up to 10% between the RTX 4080 and 4080 Super.
