It honestly doesn’t feel that long since the RTX 40 series hit the market, but we’re closer than ever to the launch of the latest RTX 50 series graphics cards. A new leak reveals that both the 5090 and 5080 are aiming for a Q4 2024 release, around two years after the current flagship RTX 4090.
One important detail mentioned in this leak though has to be the price. It looks as if picking up a brand-new video card is going to be more expensive than ever. Even still, this new development for the latest generation of Nvidia GPUs once again has us asking: should you wait for the 50 series?
RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 expected for Q4 2024
This fresh leak comes from Chinese outlet Money UDN, which openly discusses the current state of Nvidia’s AI chips. Towards the end of the article you’ll find mention of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 – revealing that board partners expect the 50 series to be unveiled in the fourth quarter of this year.
Reputable leaker Kopite has also been spotted discussing the launch of the new 50 series GPUs. Funnily enough, they were asked the question regarding new Blackwell architecture (that the RTX 50 series is based on) during a slightly more political thread. Either way, they also conclude that it is coming at the end of the year.

How expensive will the 50 series be?
No-one can know for certain how much exactly the new 50 series cards will cost. However, the very same source for the release date leak discusses the high demand for these cards (and Nvidia’s AI chips in general). This has driven up the market value, so we may see something even higher than the already eye-watering $1,599 launch price of the RTX 4090.
The last (translated) line of the article suggests that the average price of GPUs will be rising as the launch of Nvidia’s biennial GPU refresh will boost shipment volumes for their board partners. The likes of ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte are mentioned.
