XDefiant has been related to Call of Duty since the beginning of its development, and especially after the release of its open beta just a week ago, players are calling it more and more the soon-to-be killer of CoD.

The drama didn’t just start there, though, shortly after Activision received its own backlash just a couple of weeks ago, the official Call of Duty Twitter account blocked XDefiant. This only fueled the fire even more when it came to the comments of the game killing off CoD.

Player wishes XDefiant wouldn’t be called CoD killer and dev agrees

Recently, a player of the XDefiant beta posted a picture on Twitter of them playing and then stating that they wished people would stop referring to it as the “CoD killer.” One of the devs, Mark Rubin, replied to this tweet saying, “Me too.”

The poster of the picture then goes on to say a bit more about how the name-calling of the game is so unnecessary, saying, “It’s so unnecessary. Pretty sure you didn’t set out to ever ‘kill’ CoD or any other game, for that matter. We just need to appreciate the game for what it is. Looking forward to the full launch”

Players in the comments go on to make their own comments about how XDefiant couldn’t take down such a big franchise as Call of Duty, which is very true. However, it is possible that some players might want to gravitate toward this game due to past drama with CoD, which could down their daily players, but this wouldn’t be XDefiant’s fault.

Another commenter goes on to make the point that some of the people calling XDefiant the “CoD Killer” want to take stabs at Activision and don’t pay as close attention to their community and make the changes they wish they would versus XDefiant with their community. This is a valid point to make, but nothing is for certain other than this dev doesn’t want the game being called the killer of CoD either.

Many games in the past have been called a “CoD killer,” for example, Battlefield 2042, but honestly, the likely hood of any game taking down Call of Duty is very unlikely. Nothing can really kill a franchise that is as big as CoD.
