As we approach the new edition of FIFA 23, it’s time to look at who will be the best defenders in the new game. What you want from a good defender is a good combination of strength, speed and obviously being good at defending.
Traditionally you want your centre-back to be big, a tall presence at the back who is commanding and no nonsense.

The modern centre-back also needs to be comfortable with the ball at their feet, be able to pick out a killer ball and also offer some threat in the air. Only the very best defenders in the world are capable of all that.
We have also included fullbacks on the below list, a few of them should be really highly rated going into FIFA 23, offering as much going forward as they do defensively.

- Ruben Dias – Centre-back – 88 (+1)
- Marquinhos – Centre-back – 88 (+1)
- Joao Cancelo – Left back – 88 (+2)
- Trent Alexander-Arnold – Right back – 88 (+1)
- Sergio Ramos – Centre-back – 87 (-1)
- Andrew Robertson – Left back – 87 (-)
- Kalidou Koulibaly – Centre-back – 87 (+1)
- Milan Škriniar – Centre-back – 87 (+1)
- Theo Hernandez – Left-back – 86 (+2)
It looks like Virgil Van Dijk will once again be the best centre-back in the game, after he was harshly downgraded last FIFA. He showed last season he is deserving of the 90 rating again on FIFA 23.

Sadly we may see Sergio Ramos drop out of the top ten on FIFA 23. It will truly be the end of an era as one of the best centre-backs of the last fifteen years begins to wind down his career. We have only predicted him to get a -1 but realistically it could be more.
As full-backs go it’s hard to look past Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joao Cancelo as the best of the best. They play on opposite sides but they are both exactly what you want from modern full-backs.
They have near perfect delivery and are comfortable cutting in too. Trent is also an incredibly set-piece taker too. The best Premier league teams in FIFA 23’s Ultimate Team will have at least one of these if not both.
