It’s easy to wonder if MW3 is an expansion or a full game because there were rumors that the game after Modern Warfare 2 would be an expansion. Modern Warfare 3 looks like it’s got Sledgehammer Games dedicated to it, and is getting all of the marketing treatment from Activision most people would expect from a premium release, so it’s easy to wonder if Modern Warfare III will be the 2023’s new Call of Duty title.

Many players expected a two-year gap in between releases, but it looks like we may get a big addition to the roster. Before you find this out, you should check to see if MW3 (2023) is a reboot, if it has zombies mode, or what will come in the Vault Edition.

Is Modern Warfare 3 (2023) a full game or an expansion of MW2?

Call of Duty MW3 is a full game and not an expansion for Modern Warfare 2. This means that we may get DLC and changes to Warzone when the launch does come in November. While there may have been some rumors of an exception, most Call of Duty games are full launches and are treated like brand-new games.

This CoD game is a direct sequel to MW2 (2022) and will follow the storyline set in that game. This means we’ll see Captain Price and other members of last year’s game in this new Call of Duty game. This is the standalone release we’ve been waiting for to end the trilogy and bring a new Warzone.

That doesn’t mean we may not get a fourth title, this could be Activision’s way of setting up a full release for a fourth game and making Modern Warfare a staple for Call of Duty studios.

Is MW3 going to be add-on content to MW2?

The game will also not be add-on content for MW2 either. It’s going to be a full game for PlayStation, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and most consoles you’d expect. The logo, artwork, and promotional materials seem to show this as a game that got the full attention of the studio.

With this release will come multiplayer, early access, beta weekends, and a possible outbreak mode. We’re waiting on official confirmation on many things but there are some assumptions you can make with each new full premium release in the series. We are mostly expecting a new Warzone map with the change since we’ve seen a new map this past year.

Through the teaser trailers, fans can also expect to see the return of Vladimir Makarov from the previous Modern Warfare series MW2.
