Nintendo’s long-running beloved Pikmin series returns with the release of Pikmin 4 this July, with new Pikmin types, new maps, and a new story.
There are plenty of questions to ask about Pikmin 4, from what the release date is to what different types of Pikmin will be in the game.

Pikmin 4 – Do I have to play other Pikmin games first?
No, there is no requirement that you need to play any other Pikmin games before stepping into Pikmin 4. You can dive straight into the mysterious planet Pikmin 4 takes place on right away with no prior knowledge of the series.
While the gameplay and modes like the co-op mode will take some getting used to if you’re not familiar with the series, you will be able to pick it up without touching any other Pikmin game.
The story mode will also be able to be played without any prior knowledge, as you aren’t even playing the series protagonist, Captain Olimar, but instead, a new recruit that is searching for missing crew members, including Olimar. You’ll have the rescue pup Oatchi to help you, and of course, plenty of Pikmin.
The full game for Nintendo Switch includes original Pikmin like Red Pikmin, Blue Pikmin, and Yellow Pikmin, but also new types like the new Ice Pikmin and plenty of new creatures to battle and treasure to hunt.
Whether you’re a new fan of the franchise or a series veteran, there are no limitations on playing the new Pikmin 4, and you’ll be able to join the search for lost crewmates no matter whether you’ve been playing Pikmin since the beginning, or are just hearing about it.
Can I play Pikmin 4 without playing other Pikmin?
Yes, you are free to play Pikmin 4 even if you’ve never played a game in the series before. There’s a new story mode and gameplay that will introduce you to the franchise.
Should I play previous Pikmin games first?
If you’re looking to really understand the story, it’s probably best to play the first three Pikmin games if you want more lore. However, you’ll still be able to follow along easily in Pikmin 4 without playing any others.
