The Pikmin franchise has been around for a long time despite there being only a few games. While the series doesn’t have as many titles as The Legend of Zelda, it does have multiple games to choose from. In Pikmin 4, you will take up the role of a Rescue Corps member and help save Captain Olimar.
Throughout the game, you are joined by the Rescue Pup Oatchi as well as the plantlike Pikmin creatures. In this real-time strategy game, you will use your companions to overcome puzzles and obstacles as well as compete in Dandori Battles.
There are many types of Pikmin to choose from such as Yellow Pikmin and the new Glow Pikmin. Rock Pikmin might also make an appearance. At this point in a series, many companies would try to reboot the franchise. So is Pikmin 4 a reboot or is it a continuation of the story?
Is Pikmin 4 a reboot of the Pikmin series?
Pikmin 4 is not a reboot of the series but there are elements that make it appear to be. Since Olimar is on the planet and your objective is to rescue him, the events of the game have to take place after the original Pikmin game.
Instead of a reboot, many have turned to think of Pikmin 4 as a different timeline in the series. In the story, Captain Olimar crash lands once more and sends out a distress signal to the Rescue Corps. This is where you come into the story. You must launch an investigation to find Captain Olimar.
Much like other Nintendo games like Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4 seems to follow a different path than other games in the series. Instead of the standard time limit that old games had, you now aren’t racing against the clock other than the one that controls the time of day.
Pikmin 4 will bring in new Pikmin types like the new Ice Pikmin that will help you further explore the world. Glow Pikmin will help you go on night expeditions to track down additional castaways. Just watch out for creatures that are in a frenzy when during nightfall.
Other features like underground caves and a completely different environment have also been added. As you explore the world, you will open new areas of the uncharted planet. Be sure to download the demo and give it a try before purchasing the full game.
