Is there a Hardcore mode in Starfield? Bethesda likes to add harder difficulty modes to RPG games. Fallout games, for instance, have seen both hardcore and survival difficulty levels over the years. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim even had a legendary game mode.
These game modes heavily affect the gameplay of whichever game you are playing, making it harder to survive in harsh environments. For Fallout, this meant that you needed to eat, drink, and sleep.
Starfield has many factions so adding a hardcore mode could alter how those factions treat you. It could also make it more difficult to visit the numerous planets in the galaxy. Is there a hardcore mode or survival mode in Starfield?
Does Starfield have a hardcore mode?
Starfield does not have a hardcore mode. At one point in development, there was a system in place where you had to manage fuel. If you didn’t you would get stranded in space. Ultimately, this was scrapped because it was deemed a “fun killer.” This was stated by Todd Howard during the Constellation Questions Interview. There was no mention of the mode during the Starfield Direct deep dive.
Because of this, we don’t believe that Starfield will have a hardcore mode but there is a chance that it could still be added to the role-playing game. After all, it would be fun to float around space in first-person or third-person and just drift aimlessly.
Starfield does have multiple difficulty modes that range from very easy to very hard. Whether you are playing on PC or Xbox Series X/S, you can experience all of these difficulty modes. Depending on the difficulty you choose, you could have an easier time dealing with factions like the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective. It may also be more difficult to interact with NPCs and you will be more reliant on your skills.
Does Starfield have a survival mode?
Survival mode is the same as hardcore mode in Bethesda games. Starfield does not have a nightmare mode. At least, not right now. If demanded by fans, Bethesda could always add a survival mode later on so you can start a new game on a harder difficulty.
As for now, there is no information about a Starfield survival mode. The game could have extreme difficulties that make the game harder but it is unlikely from our point of view based on what Todd Howard has said about the game.
