The Harry Potter universe is expansive, and we’ve had a pretty lengthy look at this through canon from Fantastic Beasts to the crescendo of the Harry Potter series. So where else is there to go, when is Hogwarts Legacy set? Well, in Hogwarts Legacy, we’re further back than even 1926, when Fantastic Beasts take place! This also makes us wonder, is Hogwarts Legacy canon?
As trailers have point out, this is uncharted territory for the Harry Potter series, as an “unwritten” exploration of J.K Rowling’s universe. However, with the guiding hand of her own team, Hogwarts Legacy promises to deliver on interesting world building.

Hogwarts Legacy’s setting
So, as you will probably have guessed, Hogwart Legacy‘s timeline is really really old. Like, over a hundred years before Harry is even born. Hogwarts Legacy will be taking place in the 1890s.
This will follow a student in their fifth year at the school. As Avalanche, the developers have reiterated, this will take place before the time of J.K Rowling’s stories, so unfortunately, whilst some names might crop up as nice easter eggs for keen fans. That being said, we alreday know that the Sorting Hat and Nearly Headless Nick will be returning!
Is Hogwarts Legacy an MMO or RPG?
We’re a fan of this, especially considering the tone we have seen from the trailers so far. With some trailers pointing to the practise of the Dark Arts, the 1890s – the golden age of the Gothic genre in literature – seems only appropriate as a setting.
