Nothing has held Link back more than his trouble with water. Many of the Legend of Zelda games show Link without the ability to swim or at least unable to swim for very long without an item. However, that could all be starting to change with Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Let’s go over if The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will have underwater exploration for Link to partake in.

Is There Underwater Exploration In The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

While it is not confirmed, there is a high chance that Link will be able to explore underwater in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This is due to how many fans have noticed Link’s new Ascend ability works.

While many fans were taken aback by the vehicles that could replace Epona and other horses in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, others took a bit of a deeper look at how the Ascend ability works and noticed a few telling signs about it.

While Ascend was primarily shown to allow Link to travel upward, a Reddit user by the name of Ziaonann noticed an odd quirk about it during the gameplay demo. While Link is falling, Ascend is greyed out and unable to be used. But when Link dives down into the water, the icon for Ascend light up.

Ascend will become greyed out again when Link is back on the surface of the water. This means that the game recognizes Link as underwater in the instance and not mistaking him for being in the air. Making this less of a possible bug that players noticed and more of a feature that is not yet announced.

While this doesn’t confirm anything for sure, it seems to be possible that another use of Ascend could allow Link to swim upwards while underwater. This theory has been supported by fans calling out how the animation for Ascend seems to be Link swimming.

Sadly, we won’t know for sure if this is how Ascend will work or not until the full release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. As Nintendo is less than likely to confirm or deny this rumor since they are being quite hush on many features in the game, like the possible return of the paraglider.
