The Apple WWDC event for 2023 starts today, potentially giving us a bit more insight into the likes of iOS 17, the Apple VR/MR headset, new MacBook’s, and a whole lot more. Many are wondering where Apple are with AI and it is rumored that we might get a little sneak peak into that at this years event.

Generative AI has taken over, with the likes of Google and Microsoft all carving out a piece, and introducing AI into operating systems and upcoming products or services. We suspected Apple are planning to take a similar approach, with the like of Siri already flying Apples AI flag across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS.

Apple and generative AI

It has been no secret that Apple have been searching for machine learning and AI engineers, with these being a major part of Siri. The question of whether or not they enter the generative AI race is a new one altogether, albeit very likely. We saw ChatGPT drop its latest app onto the iPhone but what else is coming?

We expect new innovations to be made to Siri, however it is all rumor and speculation at this point. Mark Gurman expects Apple to drop “Hey” from “Hey Siri” but could they announce plans on how generative AI can assist with our every day use of operating systems? We have already seen Microsoft’s plans to integrate AI with Windows 11 and we have seen both Microsoft and Google bring AI into their applications, something we fully expect Apple to do too.

Apple are frequently a bit late to the party with upcoming tech, for example, they didn’t release the first tablet or foldable phone, and by all accounts they have nothing new with generative AI. Aside from a potential Siri upgrade, you have to assume they are cooking up something special. This doesn’t mean they are going to create a chatbot like we have seen from OpenAI, Google, or Microsoft but bringing AI firmly into the ecosystem is a must.

Regardless, the lack of any AI news from Apple is likely deliberate, they are clearly taking a measured approach to the chaotic boom. As mentioned, AI is already part of Apple, with Siri making use of NLP across its products and features such as fall detection, crash detection and electrocardiogram (ECG) functionality.

We eagerly await the WWDC event this evening with hope to see a potential road map around AI.
