The RTX 4090 remains the best graphics card currently available, even in the face of the RTX 4080 Super release date, but we think that things are starting to look good for the 4080 family, which hasn’t been too popular so far. The 4090 is just miles ahead and offered better value for money than the 4080 in many people’s eyes, which is impressive given the high price tag – a real blunder from Nvidia.

Nvidia announced the 40 series Super cards earlier this month and it could very well prove to be a popular launch, especially for the 4080 Super. The RTX 4080 we reviewed simply didn’t make much sense to us given its price tag – which is why many high-end builders simply opted for the powerhouse 4090. Now that the 4080 Super price tag is more enticing, the tides could tell (well, at least a little bit).

A closer look at RTX 4090 vs 4080 popularity

Take a look at the Steam Hardware survey for video cards and you’ll see that the 4090 is the most popular series flagship. Sure, it will never be on the level as the more budget-friendly xx60 or xx70 series, but it accounts for a good amount of high-end rigs. While the 3080 remains to be a popular GPU, more so than the 3090, the equivalent for the 40 series is much further down the list.

The RTX 4080 really failed to follow in the footsteps of the 3080, and the cost has been a big factor of that. Now with the RTX 4080 Super on the way and a generous $200 slashed off the asking price, it could be the new go-to GPU if you’re building a high-end gaming PC.

The RTX 4090 still hold its place as the very best, but not everyone wants to deal with its mega power-hungry 450W TDP. The new Super SKU makes the 4080 family much more competitive, so we should see an increase in popularity – both in custom and prebuilt gaming PCs.

Will the RTX 4080 Super win back some fans?

Many high-end PC builders skipped right by the RTX 4080 and went straight for the RTX 4090. We expect to see the 4080 Super win back some people though, if they haven’t already got the flagship model of course. Based on the specs, we expect the Super be a decent improvement over the original, but the price is the real winner here.

In terms of system requirements for your other components, the RTX 4080 Super will be easier to cater for than the 4090 while still being a powerful GPU for 4K and 1440p gaming. If you’re interested in the new RTX 4080 Super, head on over to our where to buy page for updated store links.

FAQs

Is RTX 4080 Super cheaper than RTX 4090?

Yes, the RTX 4080 Super will be considerably cheaper than the RTX 4090. MSRP for the new card is $999 / £959, while the 4090 still retails for above $2,000 in some cases against its MSRP of $1,599.

Is the RTX 4090 still worth it?

The RTX 4090 has for a long time been the go-to option for high-end builds, even despite the high price. We think it is only worth it if you want the best of the best, but the new 4080 Super is now a good alternative.
