iOS 16.2 comes with a raft of new features for your iPhone, some big some small, and a host of security improvements to boot. It’s probably worth the upgrade for the improved security alone, though there are some useful additions in the more functional upgrades to.

Improved security

These range from end-to-end encryption, to a total of 35 vulnerability fixes, some of which relate to core kernal processes or WebKit, which is the engine that powers the Apple Safari browser.

Although there hasn’t been any recorded exploitation or major hacks of these vulnerabilities as of yet, it’s only a matter of time, so it’s wise to upgrade now to avoid any of this.

Besides the security, the below features are new to the latest iOS update.

  • Freeform App: A new digital whiteboard application.
  • Sleep and Medications Lock Screen widgets: You can now view data on your sleep sessions and easily access your medication schedule from the Lock Screen of your iPhone.
  • SharePlay support: You can now play Multiplayer online games with people you’re on a FaceTime call with (via the Game Centre).
  • Live Activities sports scores with Apple TV: You can now see live sports scores updated on the lock screen.
  • AirDrop ‘Everyone’ setting now ‘Everyone for 10 minutes’.
  • Apple News added to the Weather app.
  • Improved Home App architecture & efficiency.
  • Improved image search in Messages.
  • 5G support for Indian networks.
  • Apple Music Sing (new): A karaoke application that allows you to quieten the vocals on a track so you can sing your own, which also adds lyrics on the screen (available on the iPhone 11 and later).
  • Advanced Data Protection (new): Gives end-to-end encryption for messages, reminders, voice memos, notes, and photos (a US-only feature until Q1 2023).
