We’ve put together a guide on where to buy one as well. So, here’s everything we know about the Sony Xperia 1 V right now.

Sony Xperia 1 V release date prediction

Sony Xperia 1 V was expected to get announced at the MWC Barcelona, but it didn’t happen. There’s was also no official confirmation from Sony during that time.

Despite that, the Sony Xperia 1 V now here, as it was officially introduced by Sony on May 11th, 2023. You can see more if this official tweet. Right now, the device is just available for pre-order, so we don’t actually have a definitive release date, but it’s more or less ready to get a hold of. Availability will likely start towards the end of June or July 2023 in line with prior releases, which we come on to further down. Signing up for pre-order right now will ensure you will be notified when you can actually purchase it. We’ll keep this page updated for the actual release date as soon as we know.

There doesn’t seem to be such a long-lasting strict release date pattern that you’ll see from the likes of Apple, for example. Despite that, we can take a look at the release date history if you want to learn about how the Xperia 1 has fared in the past.

Sony Xperia 1 release date history

If you look at the past iterations of Xperia 1 and its release dates, you might get a general idea of what to expect for the Sony Xperia 1 V.

  • Sony Xperia 1 IV: June 1st, 2022
  • Sony Xperia 1 III: June 1st, 2021
  • Sony Xperia 1 II: May 22nd, 2020
  • Sony Xperia 1: May 30th, 2019

As you can see, the company waits until the Summer to make the smartphones available. The last two editions first released on June 1st, so you may expect something similar for the Sony Xperia 1 V.

Another thing to mention is that Sony Xperia 1 releases tend to be quite staggered in their release. For example, even though the Xperia 1 IV initially hit markets on June 1st, this was solely in China, before gradually working around Asian and European markets. Then it finally arrived in the US on September 1st. We hope to see this disparity improved for the newest release, but there’s no guarantee of that.

*Previous Xperia 1 V specs rumors*

Sony is tight-lipped about the Xperia 1 V, so concrete details are currently scarce. In terms of design, Sony will follow the last year’s Xperia 1 IV, according to an online image, followed by rendered images from @OnLeaks and GreenSmartPhones. The renders show the company has hardly changed anything in terms of look.

The rear panel is the same and has a triple-camera arrangement. However, Sony may improve the sensors. The overall construction is also the same, but rumors suggest the phone could be slightly thinner. The renders also show the same button layout, headphone jack, and USC-C port. The reported dimensions of the frame are 161.0 x 69.3 x 8.5 mm, which is slightly shorter and thinner.

Sony doesn’t hold back when it comes to the Xperia 1 series. So, we are expecting the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and rumor has it the company is upgrading last year’s 12GB RAM to 16GB.

Cameras have always been the best part of the Xperia 1 series. This time the camera bump will be slightly higher. NotebookCheck has reported the primary shooter will be a 1/1.7-inch 12 MPsensor or a bigger 1/1.28 12 MP sensor. But they have also said a CMOS sensor of that caliber doesn’t exist. The rest of the sensors are expected to be the same, while the variable zoom could be improved to 70mm-105mm.

Greensmartphones reported that the 12 MP ultra-wide sensor could get upgraded to a 48 MP. Besides these changes, everything is expected to remain the same, including the IP rating and the battery size.

Sony Xperia 1 V price

There are still a few question marks about the price, especially in some key regions. But here’s what we know so far.

  • Sony Xperia 1 V price: $1,399 (£1,299 / estimated AU$2,425)

The Xperia 1 is a modern flagship series from Sony, it won’t be cheap. It’s true that the pricing for the upcoming variant hasn’t been revealed yet for all regions; however, we have the previous pricing. Take a look.

  • Sony Xperia 1: $949/£849
  • Sony Xperia 1 II: $1,199/£1,099
  • Sony Xperia 1 III: $1,299£1,199
  • Sony Xperia 1 IV: $1,599/£1,299

The pricing of the Xperia 1 IV looks odd because the European variant comes with 256GB storage, while the US variant comes with 512GB storage. Hence, the disparity. Anyway, the prices of tech products are going up constantly, and we don’t see Sony making any compromises.

Sony Xperia 1 V features we want to see

There’s no question that the Sony Xperia 1 is a high-end phone, so it should come with bigger and better features each year, right? Well, we’ve put together some of the most requested features out there.

First off, we want to see more OS updates for the Sony Xperia 1 range. This seems to a lackluster area of Sony’s phone development, especially when you compare it to other major hitters in the industry. Aside from Apple, the likes of Google and Samsung are much better at supporting their devices with the latest Android updates and other software updates for longer periods of time.

Another feature request would be an upgrade to the telephoto camera. In previous Sony Xperia 1 phones, the zoom range has been quite limited. There is some stiff competition this year when it comes to phone cameras – especially the Galaxy S23, and even upgrades to the upcoming iPhone 15.
