The Sons of the Forest tried to kill more than player characters upon its launch, it also took down a great deal of Steam’s servers. However, with all that behind us and the first playthroughs of Sons well on the way, here are the best early-game items in Sons of the Forest.

We’re going to be running through a list of the best early-game items in Sons of the Forest, so there may be some minor spoilers for the very early game. So if you don’t mind, you may read on.

How does the Sons of the Forest game start?

The Sons of the Forest has a very short intro, where you and two associates are inbound on an island via helicopter. Then without warning, your helicopter is shot down, and you’re left stranded on the island.

Why do we mention this?

Well, this is where you’re going to find your most crucial early-game items. Most of them will be scattered around the wreckage in various crates and containers. And although we’ve all been playing video games long enough to instantly check containers for loot, it’s fairly easy to miss if you’re a new player of the franchise.

Best Early game items in Sons of the Forest

There are more than a few items that are absolutely necessary for your survival that you should grab right away. Most of which are located right at the crash site. You can also come across other crash sites on the island later on to find additional loot. You may also be inclined to build a base around these areas too.

The list of items you need at the crash site is as follows:

• Tarp
• Energy bar
• GPS
• Axe
• Lighter
• Sticks
• Knife
• Painkillers

Note that the items are in no particular order, just a list of items that occur at the crash site.

All of these items are essential for starting fires, and setting up camp so you can rest and save your game. Essential on your first day considering your health will be pretty low.

The sticks could be found depending on where you crash, if it’s at the top of the mountain then you might need to venture down the mountain slightly to find some.

It’s a good rule of thumb to grab as much of everything as you can, but just in case, these are the essentials. If you want to start gathering more resources, it’s a good idea to interact with your companion Kelvin and provide him with instructions to speed up the process.

Best early game items beyond the crash site

There is a multitude of items out there that require a lot of effort to obtain. Thankfully some things are fairly easy to get.

You’re going to want to locate the 3D printer inside a cave, where you can print two pretty great items, the Flask, and the Mask. The flask allows you to carry fresh water with you, and the mask limits Demon’s hostility.

After that, you’re going to want to craft some items to help you out in combat and help to collect resources.

Easy to craft items in Sons of the Forest

There are a few items you’re going to want to craft once you’re suited and booted with a place to sleep and a fire going back at camp. With a few Sticks, Tarp, and Rope, it’s amazing what you can do.

Here are some great items to craft if you’re just starting out and low on supplies.

• Club – Stick x1, Rope x1, Skull x1
• Spear – Stick x2, Utility Knife x1, Duct Tape x1
• Repair Tool – Stick x1, Rope x1, Stone x1
• Bow – Stick x2, Rope x1, Duct Tape x1
• Stone Arrows – Stick x2, Small Stone x4, Feather x2
• Torch – Stick x1, Cloth x1
• Leaf Armor – Leaves x10, Cloth x1

All of the items on this list are very easy to craft, and will only require a couple of minutes of resource gathering. You can even ask your companion Kelvin to grab the resources for you if you don’t feel up for some gathering.

These items will give you the edge you need in the early game, and more than prepare you for basic combat.

That’s about it for all the easy-to-get early-game items. With this equipment set, you’re ready for almost anything the early game can throw at you.

Should I craft items in Sons of the Forest early game?

Once you’ve collected all the essentials from the crash site and gathered up some further supplies, ideally with the help of Kelvin (and/or friends in multiplayer), it’s a good idea to start combining them. This is otherwise known as crafting, and is an essential mechanic in Sons of the Forest. Just like in many other survival games, including the original The Forest, you’ll need to craft better items in order to have a chance of survival.

We’ve recommended crafting some essential tools such as the Repair Tool, or a Torch, which can be lit by your lighter. You’re also going to need some weapons such as a club, spear, or bow and arrows to help hunt down food or fend off enemies. Unless you’re playing in peaceful mode, you’ll run into cannibals often, so at least some basic armor helps you out here too.
