Wizards and Witches, fasten your broom’s seat belts as Hogwarts Legacy has officially kicked off. The Harry Potter-inspired game takes elements of a full-blown RPG and incorporates them into its breath-taking open-world setting, even including custom character creation for the players. However, Potterheads are left curious to learn about Hogwarts Legacy’s character creation and especially if the protagonist can be a girl. Well, let’s find out!

Can your character be a girl in Hogwarts Legacy?

Technically, you can design your character to look feminine in Hogwarts Legacy, but your character’s gender in the game is never implied. Moreover, during the character creation phase, no option assigns your player a gender.

Instead, there are a bunch of options from face shape to hair and voiceovers, which has features not categorized into male or female gender. You could go on to make a delicate, feminine character but slap on the voiceover of a burly man and vice versa.

There’s also one last option before finalizing your character, and that is choosing your dormitory – Witch or Wizard. Amusingly, there’s also no restriction over here. Having said that, your seemingly girly character can dwell in a Wizard’s dormitory, and that is something that we’ve never seen in Harry Potter movies or books. Boys, depicting masculine characters, are also in luck as they won’t get the short end of the wand by choosing the Witches dormitory.

The game is meticulously designed to be inclusive for all genders, as even when addressed by NPCs, you won’t be given any pronouns to reveal your gender. Instead, during cutscenes or when talked to, you’ll mostly hear them referring to you using neutral pronouns.

Changing your character’s appearance in Hogwarts Legacy

If you’re not happy with how your character shaped up, or you simply rushed through the process and have regrets, there are aspects you can change regarding your appearance. This can be arranged by a hairdresser, who can fix up more than just hair, thanks to magic. Madam Snelling’s Tress Emporium in Hogsmeade is a good place to visit for this. Here’s what you can change:

  • Hairstyle and color
  • Complexion
  • Eye color
  • Eyebrow shape and color
  • Voice pitch

Does character customization affect the story or gameplay of Hogwarts Legacy?

So, now that we know that you are free to customize your character in many ways – you can even recreate Harry Potter if you wish – does it actually have an affect on your journey? Well, that depends on the changes. Everyone starts off on a clean slate, so making your character masculine or feminine has no affect on the story nor gameplay. Other cosmetic changes such as showing off your Merlin’s Cloak or other fancy attire are simply for customization’s sake.

The only thing that will affect gameplay is the actual stats of your gear. There is a gear rarity and trait system within Hogwarts Legacy that will cause your gear you have different strengths. None of this will affect the story of the game however.

Can your character be a girl in Hogwarts Legacy? : Final word

That’s all there is to know if you can be a girl in Hogwarts Legacy, and kudos to Hogwarts Legacy’s inclusivity. Everyone should play video games, and no one should feel left out. As such, Hogwarts Legacy’s custom character creation is undoubtedly one the best things Avalanche Software has done, among the many other features of the game.

It’s nice that you can also tinker with your appearance even after the initial character creation process too.
