The beloved Pikmin franchise from Nintendo hasn’t seen a mainline game since 2013, but after ten years in development, fans can rejoice as Pikmin 4 is finally upon us in July, following the demo released in June.

Since there are so many colors and different types of Pikmin to choose from, and the series has been around for so long, you may have plenty of questions about the game if you’re just starting to get into the franchise.

Do you need to know if Pikmin 4 is a sandbox game? Have no fear, we’re here to give you the info.

Is Pikmin 4 a sandbox genre game?

No, Pikmin 4 is not technically a sandbox game. While it does have sandbox elements like creative freedom and exploration, it’s not an open world and has missions you need to complete to progress in the game.

The game is, instead, a real-time strategy and puzzle game, focusing on obstacles you need to clear and puzzles you need to solve with your loyal Pikmin in order to continue, as well as creatures to battle. The game has a series of maps to explore on the mysterious planet, instead of an open-world route like Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom.

Pikmin 4 will be introducing all sorts of new gameplay to the series, including new Pikmin like the new Glow Pikmin and Ice Pikmin to go along with the classic Red Pikmin, Blue Pikmin, and Yellow Pikmin, as well as the rescue pup Oatchi as a capable canine.

You also won’t be playing as the franchise’s normal playable explorer, Captain Olimar, but are instead tasked with finding him as the newest recruit of The Rescue Corps, which both you and Olimar are members of.

Pikmin 4 from the mind of Shigeru Miyamoto himself is available on Nintendo Switch in the Nintendo eShop for all adventurers to enjoy night expeditions, hunt down treasures, explore caves, ship parts, and more in the newest Pikmin entry.
