With the new Pikmin 4, the first entry in the beloved Nintendo franchise in ten years finally launching, fans of the series have plenty to look forward to.

From returning and new Pikmin types confirmed in-game, to a brand new story mode to take part in, newcomers and veterans alike are eager to explore for treasure.

But with the new story mode, fans have questions. Is Pikmin 4 a sequel or a prequel to the franchise? We’re here to let you know.

Pikmin 4 – prequel or sequel?

There’s no confirmation on whether the game is a sequel or prequel yet, but evidence points to the game being a sequel or taking place in an entirely new timeline.

Part of this comes from the mysterious planet you land on, PNF-404, already being named, which wasn’t done until Pikmin 3 after Captain Olimar discovered it. However, Captain Olimar isn’t the playable character of the game, but rather a newly recruited Rescue Corps astronaut, so you might not even be playing in the same universe Olimar discovered the planet.

So, while it’s still unknown from trailers and gameplay shown, signs point to Pikmin 4 being a sequel, including the fact that it’s simply the newest installment to release in the franchise.

While you explore the strange world this July with your new recruit, along with rescue pup Oatchi and plenty of Pikmin, you’ll journey further into the story as you encounter new bosses, find treasure, and solve puzzles as you look for lost astronauts, including Captain Olimar himself.

Your expeditions will of course have you join various Pikmin, including different types like the new Glow Pikmin and new Ice Pikmin, shown off during the Nintendo Direct and returning favorites from other Pikmin games, including the Red, Blue, and Yellow Pikmin as you search for castaways who crash-lands on the planet.
