One of the first things you’ll do in Bethesda’s latest game, Starfield, before you can begin exploring the vastness of space is make your own character. Character creation lets you make your own hero to begin your journey.
Before you can start playing the tutorial and opening of the game, before you join any factions or explore any planets, you need to make your character. There is an expansive amount of character creation options and it can be overwhelming at first. As usual with Bethesda RPGs, you can make your character look like anyone including NPCs.
Starfield’s character creation system goes beyond previous Bethesda Game Studios titles like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. So what are all the options in Starfield for your character? We’ve got all the options you can choose in Starfield to make the best space explorer you can.
All Character Creator options in Starfield
There are six different categories of character creation available for customization in Starfield:
- Biometric ID
- Body
- Face
- Background
- Traits
All of these affect either the appearance or behavior of your character, so let’s break them down so you can know what’s in each.
Biometric ID
Biometric ID had you select one of 40 preset templates to begin creating your character. It’s called the personnel record, and these templates can be kept as they are if you want to stick to one of the premade characters, but you are also free to customize them extensively through the next categories.
Body
This is the section where you can customize the shape and look of the body of your character. You can alter the following characteristics in this section:
- Body Shape
- Body Type
- Walk Style
- Skin Tone
This will allow you to decide the ethnicity, age, and overall look of your character’s body. Body shape will be determined by a circular grid leaning towards muscular, thin, or heavy, body type likely is between male and female (although this isn’t confirmed yet), walk style has a few options to determine how your character walks, and skin tone has a wide range of skin colors to choose from.
Face
The face section has a multitude of options so you can alter what your character’s face looks like. Here’s the list of what customizations are available in the face section:
- Cheeks
- Chin
- Complexion blemishes
- Complexion color temp
- Dermaesthetic
- Eyes
- Eye color
- Facial hair
- Facial hair color
- Facial forms 1
- Facial forms 2
- Hair
- Hair Color
- Head shapes
- Jaw
- Jewelry
- Jewelry color
- Neck
- Scars
- Skin tone
- Tattoos
- Teeth
This list is likely to grow, as we have not seen all the options available yet. This will let you get down into the nitty-gritty of what your space explorer looks like, and if you’re a fan of character customization, this is more than likely where you’ll be spending most of your time.
Background
There are several backgrounds to choose from for your character, and these determine what your character’s backstory is before the game begins, like what city they come from or what job they did before starting the game. The backgrounds you can choose from are:
- Chef
- Combat Medic
- Cyber Runner
- Cyberneticist
- Diplomat
- Explorer
- Beast Hunter
- Bouncer
- Bounty Hunter
- Gangster
- Homesteader
- Industrialist
- Long Hauler
- Pilgrim
- Professor
- Ronin
These each have their own descriptions of what they are and come with some starting skills. While you can choose your background based on what you like for your character, you can also pick it solely for what starting skills you get from the choice.
Traits
Finally, you’ll be able to choose your traits, which are various bonuses that can affect your gameplay. It’s worth noting that each trait has a positive and a negative, so it’s important to choose wisely and determine if the bonus that comes with the trait is worth the loss from it. Here are the traits available in Starfield:
- Alien DNA
- Dream Home
- Empath
- Extrovert
- Freestar Collective Settler
- Hero Worshipped
- Introvert
- Kid Stuff
- Neon Street Rat
- Raised Enlightened
- Raised Universal
- Serpent’s Embrace
- Spaced
- Taskmaster
- Terra Firma
- United Colonies Native
- Unwanted Hero
- Wanted
Some traits will give you access to special areas in the game like the Sanctum Universum and others will give you special dialogue options. Many traits give you access to special items or characters like the Adoring Fan or a starter home. There are great traits to choose from so make sure to try them out.
What are the best options for character creator in Starfield?
To create the best character in Starfield, it’s up to what you want your character to look and feel like. While some traits or backgrounds come with more perks than others, your appearance has no overall effect on the story other than what you look like.
If you just want to make yourself in the Starfield universe, you are free to do so, but if you want to create an abomination wandering around and scaring people, that’s an option too. There is no one character that’s better than another, it only matters what you want to be.
