Beyond having a massive universe to explore, Starfield from Bethesda Game Studios also has an enormous story for players to tackle. There’s an entire adventure to enjoy that begins with a single step.
You’ll discover planets, find alien life, battle space pirates, and more all at your own choice of difficulty. All this starts out at the beginning of the game, where you’ll take your first steps into Bethesda’s first new universe in over 20 years.

How does Starfield start?
Todd Howard’s latest game begins in the year 2330 on May 7. You’ll be starting out by exploring one of the planet Anselon’s moons, Kreet. From here, you’ll go into the character creation, where you’ll be able to choose:
- Appearance
- Character traits
- Character background
Once you finish creating your hero, you’ll head down to Kreet’s surface and the base where you’ll begin playing the game. You’ll have some dialogue with fellow crewmates along the way. The base is occupied by hostile forces, and you’ll learn combat abilities to help take them down. While on the base on Kreet, you’ll also learn other basic mechanics like scanning, mining, and more.
Once the base is completely cleared of enemies, you’ll stumble upon a strange artifact. This artifact will give you visions, which will lead you to the first faction you’ll encounter in the game, Constellation. This is just the beginning and tutorial of the game, but it kicks off your entire space adventure.
Is the beginning the same in Starfield?
While we don’t know the specifics yet, since Starfield is such a massive game, there’s a possibility that the story can start out differently depending on a number of factors.
Like some of Bethesda Studio’s previous games, namely Fallout and Elder Scrolls Skyrim, Starfield is a huge RPG with the ability for endless exploration and freedom. Exploring the Settled Systems in the light years around our own solar system, meeting NPCs and companions, and joining factions like Crimson Fleet, Freestar Collective, or United Colonies are all things you can do. The main quest is just part of the fun to be had in Starfield’s gameplay.
Starfield’s release date in September is just the beginning of a massive universe for you to deep-dive into. Whether you have the Standard Edition, Premium Edition, or the special upgrade Constellation Edition, Starfield lets you live out your spaceman dreams and venture out into the unknown.
