A crew is essential for making your ships and outposts run smoothly in Starfield. There are tons of NPCs to be found in-game, and they can be assigned to various crew positions.

While there are NPCs to romance, or NPCs who can become companions, crew members will take more of a backseat role and help man your bases. However, crew members are of no use if you don’t have any.

How do you get a new crew in Starfield? We’re here to give you all the information you need to help you get a functional crew in Bethesda’s latest RPG epic.

How to recruit crew members in Starfield

Besides crew members you pick up through completing story missions like Sarah Morgan and Barrett from the Constellation Faction, there are two main ways to recruit crew members in Starfield once you’ve approached them:

  • Hiring people for your crew
  • Persuading people to join your crew

Both dialogue options can work for getting crew members. Hiring people obviously costs credits, and each NPC will have its own cost they require, but if your persuasion is good enough, you can use your social skills to have them join your crew without costing any money.

The number of crew members you can have aboard your ship at once depends on your Ship Command Skill, while crew capacity for outposts depends on your Outpost Management Skill. If you aren’t able to recruit more, try improving these skills to have a larger crew size.

Under the Crew Menu, each of them can be assigned to different positions. This is for both crew members you’ve picked up from the main quest and the various NPCs you’ve recruited to join you.

Where to find crew members in Starfield

Crew members can be located around all the different parts of the Settled System, including cities like New Atlantis, Neon, Akila City, and more. They are often found inside bars like The Astral Lounge and The Viewport. Anyone able to join your crew will be labeled as various specialists, such as weapon specialist, to differentiate them from other various NPCs.

If you have the Hero Worshipped Trait, your Adoring Fan can also join your crew if you want them to (they are good at scavenging).

The crew will help your ship and outposts run smoother, just like Starfield companions help you in missions. There are plenty of folks out in the galaxy who are willing to help, so don’t be afraid to recruit them.
