Do you need to target a ship in Starfield? Space flight is a pretty common occurrence in Starfield and, as such, you should know how your ship operates. During combat, you will need to target engines on enemy ships.

While space combat is frequent, you won’t only be targeting enemy ships, you will also need to hail starships and space stations to talk to the crew. Think of the targeting system as being similar to Vats from Fallout. It allows you to target ships with your weapons and take out their shields.

Are you holding onto some dangerous contraband in your cargo hold? Perhaps you simply want to know how to fight to protect your own crew and companions. Here is everything you need to know about how to target ships in Starfield.

How to target ships in Starfield

If you want to target a ship in Starfield, start by getting the Targeting Control Systems Skill to rank one. This will allow you to use your ship’s targeting functionality. The Skill can be found under the tech skill tree and requires at least one skill point though you can add more as you level up.

After this, get close to a ship so that it is within your reticle. When you are close enough to a ship, press the E key on PC or the A button on Xbox Series X/S. This will allow you to target the ship or space station.

You will need to go through a loading screen as well before you are able to board the ship or space station. This is common, especially for larger space stations like the casino.

Pressing the button multiple times will allow you to cycle through the different targets around you. If you keep a target within your reticle for a brief period of time, it will allow you to target-lock the ship. This makes it easier to shoot with your ballistic weapons and missiles.

If you want to target a specific part of an enemy’s ship, you will need to enter targeting mode. This is possible if you upgrade the tier of the Targeting Control Systems skill. To enter targeting mode, press R on PC or X on Xbox.

Targeting a specific part of the ship will allow you to disable a ship’s engines, making it possible to dock with the ship during combat. It also helps to destroy specific parts of the ship like its laser systems or cockpit. Sometimes this is necessary to do during a mission like those you do for factions like the Crimson Fleet or Constellation. Other times, it will help you get extra loot.
