In one of the biggest updates since the limited test began, CS2 patch notes for 6/6/23 are here. So now those lucky enough to get access to the test get to try these new features, while the rest of us wait for the beta to come out. These are certainly set to change the meta once again, and make the game a bit more friendly for making mistakes, or making the shop a bit easier to read. So here’s what’s updated.
Map change
The Counter-Strike 2 map is finally changing. You can now stop grinding out Dust 2 and move on to Mirage instead. Although that will surely get boring soon as well, this should freshen up the experience on the limited test servers and will lead to the whole rota of options.
Loadout changes
Now in a CS2 tweet, you can get a closer look as to how this new loadout works. You finally get to run both the M4A1-S and M4A4, so you don’t have to decide which one to go for. Instead of choosing between certain pistols or rifles, you can choose what you bring to your game.
So now what the loadout is made up of for each team side, so for CT and T you get:
- One starting pistol
- Four pistol slots
- Five mid-tier slots (SMG and Heavy)
- Five rifle slots
This means you can assign any side-appropriate weapon to the loadout in the category. So now you can just bring the guns you use in-game. And can skip over the like of the M249 and Negev, as much we would miss the fun rounds of messing around. It does make it easier to pick with a drag-and-drop menu and looks like you might be able to have different music kits, graffiti, and badges for each side. So all skins and extras should be fine to feature in your equipment.
Shop changes
Now for another major overhaul, the shop wheel is gone. Now we have the Valorant type shop of all in one grid where you can see all the guns you have selected for your loadout. It can be easier to see all your weapons, equipment, and grenade choices at the same time.
It also still shows you your teammate’s purchases in the shop menu so you don’t clash too hard. But the weapon stats are replaced with a simpler description with a difficulty rating. But what this means is that you can now refund your purchases. So if you’ve accidentally bought the Negev, you can opt for a more reasonable gun by selling it back, in the same round and if not used.
CS2 workshop tools
Another addition is the introduction of CS2 workshop tools. They can be enabled and downloaded from the in-game settings and allows community members to create weapon finishes, stickers, and maps. A much more streamlined and noob-friendly way of getting into it as previously you had to find how to. Although currently, the workshop is not accepting CS2 maps, so save them until the CS2 release date.
The level editor called Hammer now allows GPU ray tracing. Bringing the game a more modern look and one with newer features might bog down the performance of the game known for how well it runs on anything. Although it’s unlikely it will come to the competitive pool, but allows community maps to bake in lighting to the workshop, and requires RTX or RX 6000 GPUs or better to run.
Sub-tick
The CS2 tick rate has been overhauled and moves away from the CS:GO timings and more frequent updates. And now movement is more precise and less floaty in the new update. Releasing movement keys correctly conveys timing. As well as triple stacking is viable again with the top player being able to shoot.
Fine-tuned weapon aim and view punch recovery and shakes have been improved. The first to be latency independent during sub-tick recovery on the client. And the view punch shakes during shooting to be latency-independent and synchronized with all other sub-tick shooting effects on the client.
Volumetric smokes
With the new CS2 smokes, there has been a change in how they work. So update them, they now have improved lighting/rendering when multiple smoke overlaps. The effect of HEs has now been reduced on the smokes, but shotguns create bigger holes in them instead.
Animation
ViewModel ‘inspect’ has been adjusted to remove any animation popping, along with plenty of animation fixes to help with that. Traversal animation has also been improved and when jumping into the air and running off a ledge is now differentiated to allow another character motion.
Sound
Your own footsteps are now predicted client side for a latency-free experience.
Rendering
Performance and responsiveness in windowed and full-screen windowed modes have been improved. Along with plenty of bugs and rendering artifacts.
Input
A crucial part of the game, the bug where input would permanently break with multiple commands on one key has been fixed. With multi-binds making a comeback (part from jump-throw binds which are now a skill). Commands on your mouse are more reliable. A bug that would incorrectly execute input when taking over a bot is fixed and inspecting weapons is now predicted client side for responsiveness.
VAC
The anti-cheat in the game is getting an update. VAC will now live-ban users during the game instead of waiting out. It will terminate the match at the end of the round unless the cheater didn’t prosper in the last round of the game and it just finished. This does null the match and does not affect any player’s Skill Group. And those not in the party with the VAC-banned user will still earn XP for the match.
