Now that Sons of the Forest is finally out in early access, folks are asking about and exploring the full Sons of the Forest map. Given that the location of the first game, The Forest, was crucial to that isolated feeling, people need to know: is Sons of the Forest the same island? Aside from answering that, we take a look at what else you can expect from the map.

Sons of the Forest obviously looks to improve upon the success of it’s predecessor, but how is that done? Well, the map for a start needs to be bigger and better! Here are all of the details about the Sons of the Forest map.

Sons of the Forest map size

According to the brilliant minds at Guided, a map size (not official), has been calculated. They have measured a map size of 9.00 km² in Sons of The Forest and a side length of about 3,000 meters by 3,000 meters.

However, we’ve also had official confirmation from the developers that the Sons of the Forest map is four to five times bigger than the first game. This was revealed in an interview with GamesRadar+ in January, and now players are fully experiencing that for themselves since the game’s early access release.

Is Sons of the Forest the same island?

Developers never specified exactly where the first game took place and it will most likely be a similar case with Sons of the Forest.

However, we do know that Sons of the Forest does take place in “Site 2”, the location shown at the end of The Forest. Endnight Games told YouTuber Farket that Sons of the Forest “is set on site 2. However, since we drew that map before starting development on this game, the map and that drawing won’t match exactly.”

The Forest takes place in a remote heavily forested peninsula. It is here that the game’s protagonist, Eric Leblanc, must fight off cannibalistic monsters while he searches for his son Timmy.

A few sites have already marked out the wider map, and whilst it looks similar to the “Site 2” map, it’s not identical, seemingly missing the North West peninsula.

What is there to discover on the Sons of The Forest map?

  • In the northeast you will find a gigantic golf course built by the missing billionaire.
  • Further up the map, next to the lake, you’ll find a bunker. In this bunker, you will find the 3D printer, which allows you to print special equipment.
  • In the middle of the map is a large snowy mountain that takes a long time to get around. Make sure you secure the climbing axe early. There are plenty of entrances dotted all over the map.
  • Caves are one of the areas you’ll have to dare to discover in Sons of the Forest. There are plenty of cave entrances to slip into; plunging into the darkness can reward you with excellent loot.

Sons of the Forest locations

All of these locations were mentioned throughout trailers over the year in the run up to the Sons of the Forest release. Now that the game is available to play, you can start examining these locations as you explore them. Let’s take a little bit of a deeper look into some of the locations which we learnt about even before the game released to the world.

Caves

A primary location in The Forest, and it makes a return. Caves are dangerous places in Sons of the Forest due to the confined space and lack of light sources. Despite that, you can be in for some great loot – including the Wetsuit and Weapon Flashlight Attachment.

Bunkers

There are several bunkers within Sons of the Forest, which are a great place to find a 3D printer – which you can use for printing various things, including the Red Mask. Maintenance tunnels and caves are good ways of accessing bunkers early on, and this sort of progression leads to the game’s Final Bunker.

Helicopter crash site

The location of where the player’s helicopter crashes. Obviously, similarities between this and the plane crash in The Forest are clear. You can crash land in various different locations on the map, but you can also come across another crash site – which is perfect for looting or even building a base.

Sons of the Forest map : Final word

The Sons of the Forest map is pretty figured out already, but there could always be more easter eggs to discover out there. Likewise, the game is working through early access, so more additions to the map may come in the near future.
