Changing the Field of View (FOV) in a game like Starfield seems like it should be easy, as with most games, but it’s actually pretty annoying. Instead of there being a menu option that’s easy to navigate and adjust, you have to use notepad.
If you’re loving Starfield then make sure to learn more about how you can change the game using the Creation Engine 2 or if the game is coming to VR or another console.
Even with the notepad information, it’s complicated and isn’t a simple ratio or resolution number. There’ll be trial and error, but we’ll help you out. Below we’ll let you know how to change the FOV in Starfield.
How to change FOV in Starfield
Since there’s no real menu option to change the FOV in Starfield, players have had to get creative. Thanks to Reddit user clu_sauce, a fix has already been found. Here is how to do it:
- Find the Starfield folder in your C Drive
- This is normally Documents/My Games/Starfield.
- Create a text file using Notepad
- Name it StarfieldCustom.ini
- Go into the file and add these text lines in this order:
- [Camera]
- fFPWorldFOV=100.0000
- fTPWorldFOV=100.0000
- Save and then check how it looks in-game.
- Do not skip this, even if you know what you want to change it to eventually. This saves the resolution that you currently have at 100 so you can change it after.
- Adjust the FOV to what you need.
While it seems silly, the 100 value represents the value you have the FOV set by default. So once you save the file, whatever resolution your game is at will be known as 100. Now whenever you change it, it will scale based on that percentage.
Below we’ll show you how to scale this based on your first resolution.
Original number | New Number | fFPWorldFOV | fTPWorldFOV |
---|---|---|---|
1080 x 720 | 1280 x 720 (HD) | 118.52 | 100 |
1080 x 720 | 1920 x 1080 (FHD) | 177.78 | 150 |
1080 x 720 | 2560 × 1440 (2K QHD) | 237.04 | 200 |
1080 x 720 | 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) | 355.56 | 300 |
1080 x 720 | 7680 × 4320 (8K UHD) | 711.11 | 600 |
1280 x 720 | 1920 x 1080 (FHD) | 150 | 150 |
1280 x 720 | 2560 × 1440 (2K QHD) | 200 | 200 |

Just change the number in FTP and FFP (tp or fp being width and height).
It’s not as good as sliders, but until Bethesda makes it easier, this is the best we can do for you. This can help you change specific views and give yourself a wider or narrower FOV. This will change both third-person and first person FOV.
Mod to change FOV in Starfield
For those of you who would rather have a mod, NexusMods’ most popular Starfield mod for Field of View is known as the Starfield FOV mod. Using this mod will make changing the FOV much easier but it is exclusively for PC users.
The mod comes with an FOV Slider, which really is all it does, and it affects both third-person and first-person view, so go to Nexus Mods if you want to change your default fov without needing to change numbers. You can’t change the specific fov angle or mess around with it much, for that, our above table will handle things.
Can you change the Starfield FOV in Xbox Series X|S?
You currently cannot change the Starfield FOV on an Xbox console. The menu settings do not allow it and it would take messing with the game files to make this slight change for your console. We suggest waiting for some kind of patch or update to change the FOV in your game.
